A new (well, to me anyway) 1976 Gibson ES355. Officially the nicest thing I have ever owned:

She's been doing music for quite a while and has a fairly large following- James Mercer probably heard of her and either went to a show or simply looked her up- she wasn't exactly playing in empty bars at the time.

Vox Ultrasonic - The poor things in bits at the moment, almost completely void of the usual on-board circuit....

It started playing up a few weeks ago so I finally bit the bullet, took it over to Ben's place & got him to give it a full M.O.T. Taking the circuit out produced equal amounts of fascination, wonderment & completely baffling realisation. These things were made in a pretty etched-in-stone fashion. Some of the wiring was actually covered in paint, suggesting all the electronics were probably put in while the guitar was still being built. Bizarre!

Anyway, it all came out in one piece & hopefully, at some stage in the next few months, Ben'll be able to locate the problem & (fingers crossed) replace the part easily. The circuit's one of those sandwich-board constructions that probably wasn't supposed to be tampered with. There's little to no information on this particular circuit but it's widely suggested that most of the effects (Treble/Bass Boost, Distortion, Repeater & Wah) were the same as the early pedal versions. Servicing individual areas wasn't an issue as you'd originally be expected to replace the complete "module" with a new one. They were smoking some crazy shit back in the 60's!!

Yep. A palm-wah.
Very strange but quite good fun to play with (when everything's working!!)
Check it out here, from 4:15 onwards (it's not me & the guitar's slightly different but the effects are the same).
