Incoming! '77 Tele content
I didn't mean to buy this.
So, a few months back I bought this guitar from the original owner in Louisiana but they cancelled the transaction due to 'fears of shipping overseas'. That's fair I guess, not everyone is comfortable in their packing abilities or whatever. I put it out of my mind and moved on. A month or so later I got a weird shipping notification and it traced back to the seller. Turns out he'd fudged a pedal sale to Switzerland and it was coming to me instead. After a bunch of messing about I managed to get the package turned around and back to him (actually not that easy). Still, he kinda owed me a favour but was just a random on the internet - even though I'd built a bit of a rapport with him over the dozens of messages.
Fast forward to this weekend just gone, he messaged me and said, essentially, "I sold it to a friend in California who then needed to pay medical bills so sold it back to me. He had it refretted while he had it so that's a bonus. I realised that shipping it to the UK is really nothing more than a different address and one extra bit of paperwork... would you like to buy it still?" and accompanied the message with a pretty decent offer. I accepted and now it's on it's way!
Clearly life wants me to have this sick looking '77 custom...
Check out that poly 'checking'!...
It's all original bar the frets. Neck looks like it's gonna be a nice chonk too. Yes, I know its 3 knobs, one switch and one pickup too many for me but these things have always looked so badass to my eyes, especially in black. The only thing I'd prefer would be a Rosewood neck but maybe it'll be nice to have a change.
Plans? Probably just put a low profile bridge on there to spare my knuckles and leave it at that. Usually if something is that worn and needed new frets then it probably is one of the 'good ones'. At least that's been my experience.
He's sent it on the USPS/Parcelforce route so I expect it'll take a couple of weeks to arrive.

It's a stunner! I'd expect it to land in UK within a couple of days and then Customs/Parcelforce will sit on it for a couple of weeks before you having to chase them
Are you going to 'Johnny' it?

I'm under threat of violence from MattK if I do
No idea yet. I kinda like how they look with all the fluff going on. I know the selector switch is going to annoy me though. I have a feeling I'll try and relocate the switch and lose a knob or two. All reversible stuff.

Beautiful! Why doesn’t poly check like that anymore? Or does it?
Also, please leave the Louisiana sticker on it!

I think they had some bad batch paints in the 70's. I've seen a few 76-80 Fenders with large cracks in the finish. Almost always in the black ones too.Unicorn Warrior wrote: ↑Fri Apr 05, 2024 2:55 amBeautiful! Why doesn’t poly check like that anymore? Or does it?

And yes, the Louisiana decal is staying....that thing is cool as hell - I wish it was on the front!

This with the wiring set up like that super janky parts tele I found on reverb would be sick, not that it isn’t already.

I love it. Have always had a soft spot for Tele Customs and Tele Deluxes, the Custom being the preferred choice with that standard tele bridge and pickup.
Sweet score, Johnny!

Who knows, that ‘something’ could be really nice.
I doubt it.
But it could be.

DUDE welcome to the world of Tele Customs!!!
My two are 74/75 though.
Lemme know what you think about the neck. I actually prefer maple and MIGHT be willing to trade you my rosewood one for yours. We'll see ok?

Re: Incoming! '77 Tele content
Looks like it's fatally flawed again.
For various reasons, this is not actually on its way to me anymore. Maybe the universe is saying to leave it be.
Maybe it's time to log out of Reverb and eBay for a while
