Well now it’s a yellow standard precision bass…. Finished!

Some of you might remember the desert sand P Bass I got from Pat a long time ago. I REALLY miss that bass. It was beat up in such a beautiful way and such a neat color. I got the itch to get a lightly beat up P Bass and was shocked at how much bodies are running nowadays. MIM bodies are like $250. That isn't terrible, but you can buy MIM P Basses for around $500, so paying $250 for just the body is kind of nuts. I wasn't finding what I really wanted on eBay or Reverb. Luckily I got an email from Guitar Center reminding me I have a credit card at their company so I looked there and found several nice looking P Basses that were well priced. I picked the most "distressed" one of the group to try to fit my needs and scratch that itch. It actually is supposed to arrive tomorrow which feels super fast. It has a weird guard so I ordered a yellowed pickguard that has some funky sticker light spots which should fit with the dings and chips on the body. I also ordered a Kluson high mass bridge since those are my personal favorite bass bridges. Pickup wise I ordered some G & L MFD bass pickups. I heard they were pretty good if you like a more aggressive sound. Pics will come in tomorrow if it arrives like they say it will.

I've long said that you'll never do better than an MIM P Bass for the money, and that was back when you could buy them for less than $300 all day long. I have one in sunburst and it's lovely - the previous owner had already installed Seymour Duncan Bass Lines pickups and I have zero need for anything else. I bet those MFDs are going to sound great!

I am excited to give them a try. Normally I like Geezer EMG's pickups in my bass, but I wanted to try something new. Lots of bass forum people say the MFD pickups are good for a more aggressive tone which I tend to like with bass.

Also I agree with MIM stuff. I don't mind them at all. Now that they are over a grand sometimes it kind of bothers me, but that is how it goes I guess. Japanese Fenders used to be like that too. You could get those for like $500ish all day back in the day. (How to sound old....)

The bass came in last night and I was able to unpack it today instantly it looked off. The neck looked ok but the body looked too thin. Ended up being 1.5” which isn’t right. I pulled the neck off and there is blue paint on it under the neck and the body had a cardboard shim and a hole through the middle of the pocket. Not a Fender body for sure and definitely not the neck it came with. I spoke to Guitar Center and they told me I could return it to the Tacoma store to speed up the return process. They were pretty embarrassed that another store didn’t catch that and sent it off. I also shared with them the store who packed it just did a couple wraps of bubble tape and stuck it in the box. They didn’t tape it to hold it together, just looped it around the body a couple times and called it good. He noted that in the return for that other store and said the body is likely a silvertone one or something. They did the return and helped me order a yellow MIM P Bass from their site. It will ship to their store so if it shows up janky it will save me an additional trip.

So yeah…. Now it is a yellow p bass coming in…

Bummer about the body (and packing). The best thing about GC is when they don’t know what they have; the worst thing about GC is when they don’t know what they have.

I’ve been sending stuff to stores just to unbox it with them present so as to call out any weirdness as it’s discovered. Maybe some discounts from that (which may be a thing if the past) but worst case is that it’s quick to return if a no-go.

I suppose I have been lucky in the past. This is the first thing I picked up from them that was like this. Your approach of having them ship to in store makes a lot of sense though. More practical than having to drive back and forth or wait for your return to ship all the way back to them.

LOL It isn't yellow. It arrived. It is awesome. It is butterscotch blonde. I will be pimping it out but it is already very pretty. Someone put a US pickguard on it and the holes don't match so I will be changing that. Thinking black guard with those G&L pickups. Also pretty sure this has an ash body. Total win in this return/exchange.

I FINALLY got around to swapping the guard and pickups. The MFD pickups from G&L are great. Pretty growly but you can use the tone pot to bass it up if you like. I am fond of aggressive pickups, so I think they are pretty amazing. The black one ply matte pickguard fit perfect and no more empty holes. Also I think it looks a million times better. I also put the bigger Kluson high mass bridge on it because I love them. Nothing wrong with the stock ones. I just really like how these are setup and easy to adjust.
