NGD: Gretsch G6128T Players Edition Jet

Post by Jonesie » Thu Sep 28, 2023 2:02 pm

Well well well, what do we have here.

I had fallen out of love with a couple of pieces of gear that I have (a Strat and my Ampeg Jet being the big ones,) so I started keeping an eye out for potential trade bait, and I listed the gear on Craiglist/Marketplace. There's a shop in Troy, NY, Love of Fuzz, I was searching their Reverb page and I saw that they had this Gretsch. I've always had a soft spot for Gretsch guitars (thanks Australian Rockabilly-ish Punk band The Living End.) I reached out to them last week to see if they'd potentially be interested in a trade and they said yes, so I headed there this afternoon.

Got there, showed them the Strat and Ampeg and they were into it, and I tried out the Gretsch, and I was into it. So a deal was done. The Gretsch seems to be in pristine shape. I can't find a scratch or ding on it. Unplugged it's lively and resonant, and plugged in to my Marshall Origin 20 it's somehow twangy and beefy at the same time. The guitar plays great; the action is super low with my preferred 10-50 strings. Everything on the guitar just looks well done and well made. The only change I'll likely make at some point (probably soon) is getting a Compton aluminum bridge on here. I've had them on a couple of guitars and I love how they feel and what they bring out of a guitar tonally.

It has some pretty cool features, it has a smaller neck joint, which really makes playing on the higher frets easier, compared to a standard Duo Jet or a Les Paul.

Image

It also has Gotoh locking tuners, Schaller strap buttons (which I may change out for regular Fender ones, we'll see what happens.), and it has a non-floating bridge, which is a nice little feature. It has a string-thru Bigsby, which isn't really a big deal for me. At one point I had three Bigsby equipped guitars and I got used to doing the pins. It's actually a little difficult sliding the string ends into the cups here due to the angle, not a deal breaker though. The neck is slim, but comfortable, pretty similar to my Yamaha Studio Lord, so it won't take much getting used to in that regard.

It's not the White Falcon of my dreams, but I think that's an unattainable goal.

Anyways, here's what you're here for, my apologies for not cleaning off the top super well.

Congrats. MIJ Gretsches are consistently among the best guitars I've ever played.

Thanks all! I'm really enjoying it. Now my guitars are getting more and more esoteric. Duo Jet, Tele, JM, Ric, Yamaha Lawsuit LP... Got a lot of flavors covered.

It's funny, I realized with the Strat that I traded that all I wanted to do with it was play with a chorus and delay pedal on the middle/bridge setting. Just make chimey DMM noises, or play fake Big Star riffs. I just don't think I'm a Strat guy. This is much more my speed. I'm a jangly guy.

Awesome! Congratulations.
Mrs. Cestlamort has a recent sparkle jet and it's one of my favorite guitars ever.

Would combining the two be a “cosmic ballet”?

The Jangle Force is strong in this one.

Aww, congrats, Jonesie! I had one just like that and miss the hell out of it. It was and continues to be one of THE nicest guitars I’ve ever owned. The build quality was absolutely superb, I wish I’d never sold it.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Between you and Maggie you aren't helping my current Gretsch GAS. I haven't owned one since about 2008 and I've been learning heavily towards a Penguin or Billy Bo Jupiter.

Looks great dude

Happy NGD! Those Japanese Player Gretsch's are stellar guitars.

Thanks man. But I’m sensing a trend. First you buy a Ric after I buy one, then you might buy a Gretsch after I buy one… hah

Maybe you're my secret 'tipping point' guy. The Rics I'd been eyeing up for a while and yours convinced me to drop the change for one. The Gretsch's I've been hankering for another for about 5 years but never taken the plunge. My only Gretsch in the past has been an old Electromatic Duo Jet and I've got a couple of irons in fires before today for another.

Let's just say me and someone else on here have been talking, and a plan is afoot.

I posted that beautiful Black Penguin over in the GAS thread last week that, fortunately for my bank balance, sold pretty quickly.

Beautiful Jet :-* definitely on my list of wants for some point in the future, that or a Black Penguin 🐧

As Embenny said, the MIJ Gretches are all fantastic. I've had a White Falcon for 15 years now and it's just wonderful. Doesn't get nearly as much play time as it deserves though - hopefully my imminent gear purge shall rectify this as the Gretsch is going nowhere, far too sentimental.

Looking forward to seeing what Johnny ends up with. A Bo Diddley would be amazing!
