Tow that spring to ming are Weldy Melvoin (Prince) and Susanna Hoff's (Bangles). Both favoured Rics at times

I was thinking of Brix Smith from the Fall and Kat Bjelland from Babes in Toyland. Brix played a white 330 with black hardware and Kat had a red 425 (with a single cornetto).

In the ‘90s Austin scene there were a few. I remember the guitarist for Sincola playing a 360 and 2-3 women playing Rick basses. The bassist for Black Flag played a 4001, or it might have been a 4003? I think her name was Kira and she had a blue Rick. Dominique Davalos played a black 4003 for a while but usually she plays a red Jaguar or a vintage Precision bass with Kathy Valentine from the Go-Gos.

Ahh, yeah, Kira Roessler was a Ric bassist actually now you mention it. And the story around them hiring her but insisting she finishes school (so adjusted their touring pattern to suit) is a solid lesson in punk responsibility



Also, not sure if she's been mentioned, but Jenny from Warpaint has a white Ric bass that seems to be her baby. And she's SUCH a great bassist

Yeah man she is, lot of groove. I wonder if she uses the Rick-O-Sound feature of her bass... I assumed it was two mono outputs so whatever setting you had went to two different amps, but it's actually way more complex than that; stereo jack that needs a Y-splitter to separate the pickups to different amps, sounds awesome. Sweetwater piece here with sound clips.

A lot of people complain about playability but I’ve never tried one I didn’t like. One day I’ll have one. The best bass tone I’ve ever played is still a ‘77 4001 through an Ampeg B-15N. It was a long time ago, but it was thick and punchy and glorious.

The only thing that puts me off is apparently they have a p-bass nut width, which I don't tend to like. I need to do some digging and see if there's any years that they slimmed at all.

To me they generally feel narrower than a P, but definitely not to the same extent as a J. Perhaps this is helped by the string spacing staying tighter down the neck.

FWIW I had a 2013 4003 for a while, and while I would say the neck was narrower than a P but not as narrow as a J, and it did sound fantastic, it had a chunky flat backed U shaped profile that I really didn't get along with. Sometimes I miss it because it sounded and looked amazing, but I do not miss playing it. I'm sure other years have other profiles, but I'm actually still yet to come across another 4000 series in the wild to find out.
