New Guitar Year

Post by CaptainCrunch » Fri Jul 10, 2020 2:23 pm

So for basically the past decade I’ve been working more on drums and drumming, and it’s always been my least-worst instrument. In the last year or so I’ve been getting into guitar and bass again. Right around then a cheap Gretsch popped up on CL, I bought it, and things have kind of accelerated since then. I’ve never been good at NGD threads, and haven’t really been on guitar forums much since ReRanch fell apart.

Image

L-R Charvel Fusion Deluxe, Fusion Special, Fender Japan Strat (one of the black neck ones), 60’s Gretsch Clipper w/added bridge pickup, early 80’s Greco LP Custom, and an ‘07 Melody Maker.
Basses are an 80’s Hohner P-Bass named “Uncle Steve” (guy I bought it from said “All I know is it’s named Uncle Steve, and I need 20 bucks for it”) and a ‘67 EB-0 with a lousy refin.

some good scores!

I like the Melody Maker, and I was thinking of getting an EB0 and trying to join a shitty band.

I do have a ‘65 Mustang refin (and some other neat stuff), but this is just the last year’s worth. That was the borderline alarming part, to me. I’m not sure if I’m looking more what with not having much else to do, or if there has been an uptick in stuff worth buying.

Before that I hadn’t really bought anything guitar-ey besides $25-$50 Goodwill First Acts to give to nieces/nephews/friend’s kids since 2011 or ‘12.

Here’s the rest of the family, if anybody cares

Image
L-R Tele partscaster w/Tokai (probably) neck, Squier Bullet that’s actually shockingly nice to play, ‘65 Mustang refin, Tokai ‘56 Strat copy, MIM Strat body w/Fernandes neck, Teisco I refretted and made new pg for years ago

Image
L-R 70’s Ibanez AR-50, ‘61 or ‘62 SG Special refin, ‘66 EB-0, Stinger ( Martin’s cheapo copy line) PJ bass, Ibanez SR400, Squier Bronco bass

And of course a dozen projects in the basement

I GOTTA give a shout-out to those Charvels! Great shred machines- I'm a bit of a sucker for the whole brand line, but those Fusions are great!

Nice stable!

I've been sorta bad this year too when it comes to guitars- I think the running total is 7. No- 8!

2 Fender ARXIIs
2 Texas Toast EXII repros
1 '67? Univox 12-string
1 Charvel Desolation Skatecaster
1 Eastwood Surfcaster 12 repro
1 Takamine EG series E/A 12string

My wife is a patient woman... good thing we got this Apocalypse on.

I had a Traffic-Cone-Orange w/maple and EMG’s back in the day, and it’s still the nicest playing guitar I have ever had. The necks are crazy skinny, and active pickups ain’t for everybody, but it was one of those guitars where anything I couldn’t do with it was on me, and not the instrument holding me back or anything.

Getting a Floyd perfectly set up is also a “THE LORD IS TESTING ME” ordeal, but you feel like a guitar ultra-genius once you do it.

Problem is they got expensive when I wasn't paying attention. The black one was a silly-cheap BIN, but the orange one was more than I paid for the SG and the Mustang combined.
( It’s a pretty rare color and I got tired of waiting for a cheap one)

That Mustang looks super sexy! :-* Also the Ibanez is kinda cool - reminds me of that one picture of Hendrix with an Acoustic Black Widow guitar.

Until now I only received three "new" guitars this year.
My Rexter-Custom-Double Bound B&B "Liquid THUNDER" Jazzmaster
The HSIN-MI (sadly no Teisco Spectrum III) but still my first vintage and also a very cool and weird thing!
The third is still not finished yet - it's gonna become a Firemist Gold-Custom-Telemaster. I finally made good progress on the Pickguard plans though!

But I also finished my VM Squier Jaguar (that I received in autumn so within the last year) to GFS Surf 90s and Behind The Bridge PU and Vibrato Upgrade project - so this feels like a new guitar too!
And I just ordered some parts for upgrades on my Eastwood Sidejack - so that I play that one more too! ;-)

...and maybe I'm getting weak and pull the trigger on a Vintera OTM Jag later this year...month...day! It's hard to resist (827€ at Musicstore) but I'm still staying strong! Wish me luck or send me money to fund it! ::)

Thanks! I contemplated doing this one in an exotic color, but the grain fill looks to be mostly intact, so Heritage Cherry just seems right.
