Could it be possible Simon Nicol borrowed Syd's guitar for that TV spot? There's the Joe Boyd connection....
Or maybe it was the other way round: "I never felt so close to a guitar as that silver one with mirrors that I used on stage all the time. I swapped it for the black one, but I've never played it." Maybe he swapped his Esquire with Simon Nicol directly?

Yeah I'm not sure I believe that either... would just seem to be a weird time for pictures to have been takenUlricvonCatalyst wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 1:31 ammgeek wrote: ↑Mon Jul 13, 2020 1:21 amThe first pics of Syd with it seem to be vague 'spring '68' http://www.sydbarrett.com/photos/solo-p ... 1]/NG/1943
I'd always assumed those pictures were also by Mick Rock for some reason. Not sure the 'Spring '68' designation can be taken as gospel, despite being from the official Syd site. I wonder what publication, if any, they were taken for.
If that IS a legit date, then this pic of Sandy Denny using the Fairport black custom in June would rule it out being the same guitar

Simon Nicol using Richard Thompson's Grimshaw GS30... perhaps suggesting he didn't really get on with the tele?

It's difficult to draw any conclusions from dates stated on the internet, unless they can be tied to specific events such as that Barn Dance. And I guess if Simon Nicol had got Syd's Esquire off him that fact would have come to light by now. It's all too easy for the imagination to run riot. It's probably a fair bet that more than one of those Customs made it over here.
I wonder what became of Simon Nicol's?

If it is a different one, then I guess it could have been destroyed when their van crashed in '69, but I haven't seen any other pics of them using it after that one from June '68, so there's plenty of time for it to have been sold between those two dates.
All speculation on my part of course that it's the same guitar, but I do think it could have been missed. There's a TDPRI thread re the picture of Sandy Denny playing it and no one has even cottoned on that it's a Custom Tele in a rare colour.

Re: NGD - Fender Japan '62 Reissue Custom Telecaster
There was an amazing, long running thread on there about the tele Steve Marriott used on Color Me Pop that I checked back in on occasionally. After a few years THE GUY HE GOT IT OFF turned up on the thread, willing to spill the beans. His first post, he'd signed up just for this thread. Apparently they'd done a trade for another recognisable Marriott guitar, I had so many questions...
aaand a mod rolled in, typed 'THIS THREAD IS FOUR YEARS OLD START A NEW ONE' and locked it.
