NGD: What is wrong with me?!? (Ibanez Shredder Content)

Post by daemon » Fri Mar 13, 2020 2:26 pm

So I'm walking through Goodwill and see this guy sitting in a corner for $49. Despite being a shredder that I'd normally never give a second look, I figure for that price I can get it cleaned up and sell it for at least that much. It was missing two of the locking nut screws and one of the things that holds the strings down, but upon asking my metal guitar expert at work, it turns out he had exactly those spare parts at home. I also had to spend $8 on the little blocks that sit against the string in the saddle.

After hours with special rust killing WD-40 and a toothbrush (not my main one) loosening up the bridge parts and familiarizing myself with the unholy black magic of the Floyd Rose, I had the thing together and sounding like a real guitar. And, to my extreme surprise, I'm seriously digging it. The super flat fretboard is really easy to solo on (the whole point, I guess), but not bad at all for chording. And I can wail on the trem without it even giving a whiff of going out of tune. I'd always kind of looked at these guitars with a knowing smirk, but I can see why people like them. Time for some shredgaze!

Yea, it's rare to come across any thrift shop guitar these days that's not a Squier and not at least $75 or $100. Just serendipitous dumb luck.

Oh yeah, nothing wrong with you at all I feel like 99.9% of the board would have taken a chance for less than $60 total. I have no idea for sure but have to assume the Floyd alone is worth more than that. Solid find for sure!

I've been wanting a shredder guitar. I would buy that one for $50, absolutely.

I'm not sure how much the FR is worth as it's a licensed one, and it's not the prettiest one for sure, but it seems to work exactly as designed. The fine tuners are actually really responsive, and once I got it in tune a couple days ago it hasn't strayed despite a pretty good workout. Maybe this'll be the next wave of cheap pawn-shop guitars as the Hair Metal folks age out.

I think shredder guitars look cool as hell but the aggressive uselessness of a floyd rose in a non-shredder setting is extremely tough

Congratulations!

One of my guitars is kind of the precursor to a lot of those later shredder guitars - an ‘84 polar white Roadstar II RS 525. It doesn’t have a Floyd, but Ibanez’s version of it, with the fine tuners on the bridge & locking nut. It doesn’t do the Floyd floating ”wobble”, at least not the way I had it set up, but it will dive or rise, and very rarely goes out of tune because of it.

It’s in really good shape and it’s a very good playing guitar, especially after I had it all set up well. I got it for about $200, and the guy I bought it from had a luthier set a piece of balsa wood under the bridge, because he wanted a hardtail. The bridge pickup was replaced with something hot (probably a Seymour or diMarzio).

It’s definitely a dated semi-shredder, but it plays wonderfully.

Yours is a 1991 model judging by the Floyd version on it.

I have a soft spot for shred guitars too. I played an old Kramer Pacer at a GC a few years back and it was a joy, super easy on the hands.

Man, nice score. Seriously. We all hope to find such a deal, most of us don't.

Nice. I have an '87 RG440, which I like a lot.

I love Floyd Roses and I like flat fingerboards too (sometimes, I basically end up liking anything that isn't the "normal" way of doing something). I think that both these things would be a lot more appealing on different body shapes.
