Here is an underside picture of the blacktops:

Here is a slightly deconstructed picture of the chrome tops, best I can find:

Here is a series from Curtis Novak deconstructing the chrome top pickups and explaining them:

From what I can tell, he refers to one magnet, maybe what we are seeing in that final picture, so that would suggest steel poles.

Does anyone know if these are magnetic screws or if there is a bar magnet?
I 100% know that the black top versions are pole magnet screws. I think I have read that the chrome top pickups are bar magnets.
Careful - we might lose them by attrition if people raid them for WRHB poles :D
Haha. That actually does worry me and has occurred to me before.

I don't want to raid them for polepieces (you can get good alnico threaded rods now), but I have considered putting a pair of them into a parts guitar. Problem is that I can usually only find the chrome pickups for a reasonable price, not the black bobbins.

congratulations! It looks great.

the neck is indeed the best part of this guitar. And i really liked the looks of this guitar, especially the F holes, but the low output of the pick ups was not really working for me. lack of sustain was also really a bummer...

it sort of sounded like a less Rickenbacker Rickenbacker - if I wanted that sound I'd be happier with a 360 or 330.
For those new to Fender history, this is because CBS hired Roger Rossmeisl, former Rickenbacker designer, to head the design department at Fender. The Coronado and the Starcaster were his most prominent Fender designs.

I have plenty of love for Coronados even though I only played an original model briefly a very long time ago.
I’ve tried a few of the reissue ones, but they’re hardly a Coronado with the bridge, pups and semi hollow body.
I doubt there will ever be a proper reissue.
I hope to someday own an original. LPB Coronado IIs give me major GAS.

That’s absolutely stunning. Seriously my favourite finish. Would love to try a coronado one day. There’s a reverb or chicago music exchange video of someone playing one and the tone is so sweet.

I'm still really digging the tones of this one—big and gorgeous in the neck and super chimey at the bridge. It got me thinking about the pickups' construction again. It looks like the coil shapes are pretty different on the two styles. If the silver ones have a relatively wide, flat magnetic field, that may account for why it sounds so much better with the screws extended. I'd be interested to know more about that magnet.

This site suggests that the magnets on the black bobbin ones are rod magnets bonded into a threaded insert that screws into the bobbin rather than threaded magnets. These images from an eBay sale it seem to back that up since the polepieces appear fairly smooth on the sides and the inserts are moving with the rods, but I can't tell for sure.

Well that is a clever way of making adjustable rod magnets!

And the pickups are VERY different. I've described my blacktop Coronado II as sounding a bit like a Jaguar, but with a hollow body twist. And looking at the construction, you can understand why. Similar coil shape. Instead of the claw it has the pickup casing, but doing pretty much the same thing.

Though my chrometop is a 12 string, the sound is much more delicate.

That said, they are both bright and chimey. The blacktop just has a bit more grunt behind it.

I think its -66, thats what my buddy who brought it from Germany said. Has Paul written on neck pocket and two small stamps.
I made 24" conversion neck for it as the orginal neck is long lost.
