Can someone ID the rough year & model - Gibson acoustic....

Post by PorkyPrimeCut » Fri Oct 26, 2018 1:58 pm

Nothing too challenging. Just a lovely looking guitar used in a scene from Ozark...

Image

It looks old, probably a vintage model they hired as a prop. Funnily enough there's a continuity error shortly after this shot. The guy leans it awkwardly against the couch & suddenly in the next shot it's lying flat. Made me think at least one guy on set thought it best to stop it from falling over.

I'm a bit confused by the pickguard & the natural finish. I've never really found a good source of image-based info on Gibson acoustics so this could be an old Southern Jumbo, Country & Western or J50. My first guess was the Jumbo but all the round shouldered Jumbos I'm finding have burst finishes.

Anyone?

after 5 seconds of looking at the pic (literally) my brain clicked into saying it is a round shouldered Southern Jumbo (or Country Western if it is a 60s model).
Reasons - round shouldered, binding on neck , split parallelogram markers.

The year could be 50s or early 60s. The round shouldered Southern Jumbo (or CW) changed to a square shoulder in 61/62.
Now is it an early - mid 50s or late 50s - early 60s?
The fact that it doesn't appear to have an adjustable saddle would indicate that it is an early 50- mid 50s model.. but the photo is so poor resolution one cannot tell whether the adjustable saddle has been replace d with a fixed saddle,

If I was to put the money on the table and make a guestimation ... it is a lte 50s Southern Jumbo with the fixed saddle (the made both fixed and adjustable saddle versions in the late 50s) I base this guess on the fact the peal "covers" over the bolts to secure the bridge are quite prominent.

Note the (round shouldered) Southern Jumbo is just a tarted up J45 / J50

I was going to say J-50 but do the split parallelograms fit that?

An Advanced Jumbo seems a fit for that.

Southern Jumbo? Country and Western?

I think we can rule out anything from the Norlin years, where I think they skipped the round shoulder design entirely, even with J-45s and such.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Yeah .. a Southern Jumbo in ... wait for it ... Natural was available in the 54/55 time period (designated SJN), that's why I thinking it was a SJN (aka Country Western below the Mason-Dixie line) from the latter half of the 50s

I remember spotting that guitar in the show and thinking it reminded me of my old ‘57 J50 - as others have said a SJN ... beautiful guitar
