It'd be cooler if you put a gibson logo on there, though. :shifty:
Epiphone. Really fuck with people.
That's the ticket!

I remember a guitar world thing about the influence of Ace Frehley. It had a picture of Dimebag Darrell and Snake Sabo both painted up like Ace, holding les pauls. Sabo's was a knockoff and he had a piece of white tape over the logo with "gibson" scribbled on it. In quotes. ;D

I thought he did a good job with that.

It's like wearing a wig. You want to fool some people but not everyone

And you give full disclosure leading up to a sale/serious relationship

i hate them. but saying that, i have had a pain in the ass experience with this shit.

so i used to work in a charity shop. best job i've ever had. one day, we got a "fender" strat in. it was obvious it was'nt a usa strat as the headstock claimed...... because it was a £80 westfield. my boss asked me and i told her the signs that it was'nt. she wanted to double check to be sure. so she sent it to be appraised. i was right. but to generate interest in the shop and a special "collectors" event she had planned. this was one of the few times me and this boss clashed. i explained that selling it as a fender is kinda an illegal and dodgy thing to do. hence why most times on guitar groups, people have to sand off said logo and sell it as what it really is. a fake. but she said "we need to drum up business for this event so we'll leave it in the window as is for now" the event was 2 weeks away. every 5th customer in the shop was asking "can i see the guitar in the window?" or "what can you tell me about the fender" most the regular customers knew i was a guitar player btw since i would play guitar when the store was empty and i did all my work. but we were told "dont tell them it's a fake, dont give them a guide price, dont give them any information on the guitar. just tell them we're waiting on it being appraised and if they want it, come to the event bright and early" which i thought was shady, dishonest and shitty as all hell. so every customer who wanted to see it, we had to tell them "come to the event" or "we're waiting on it" sadly, most the people asking about it were not even musicians. just the type who watch antique shows and have heard stories about a vintage fender found in a charity shop for £50 and hoping to make a profit.

so, the day comes. we have a line of 50 people out front of the shop banging on the shutters while we're setting up the shop. we had lot's of interesting items but it was obvious which one people were in for. first come, first serve situation. this antique hunter woman comes, basically knocking people over to get to the guitar. we explain to her "we had it appraised, its not a real fender, it's just a £80 guitar with a fender decal on it. if you are ok with that, you can buy it" her thinking she got one up on us and we didnt know what we were on about decided to just go for it. you can guess what happened. we had 50 pissed off customers who had apparently waited an hour just for a chance to buy one product just flooded out the shop.

2 days later. the woman returned saying "this is not a real fender, it's a fake"
we told you it was a fake when you brought it.
"yeah but i thought you did'nt know any better"
even by charity shop standards. electric guitars, no matter how cheap are usually considered high ticket items, we have a guitar builder/modder working for us (me) we were going to have this appraised no matter what. we were honest with you and your trying to return it because you wanted to try getting one over on us when we were honest.
"can i just get my money back?"

so guitar went back out in the window with a sign saying "not a real fender stratocaster" and a price tag of £60. guy comes in and buys it..... returns it a few days later saying "it's not a real fender"

my friend ended up buying the guitar and parting it out. making sure to remove that damned fender logo. but safe to say. that is one major issue those guitars have.

Laughable, IMO there's nothing wrong with owning a Squier*, if it was good enough for Kid Congo Powers and Jeffrey Lee Pierce then it's cool enough for you, your cat and your granny. I can't imagine anyone I've ever been friends with doing it, it's just so fucking far outside my realm of experience and the jib cut of people I'm affiliated with (this also goes for the sort of tragic dildoes who stick M and AMG badges on their cooking German cars and no doubt some tube socks down the front of their trousers).

I've seen some crazy talk on here where folk think that sticking some pickups and a mastery on a Squier makes it no longer a squier. In that case I'd advise you just spend the money on some talking therapy.

Why stop at Fender, why not go with a Hermes logo, Chanel, or Bugatti, or Cartier...

I say it's laughable but if you sell it on with the logo you are IMO despicable because no doubt some naive kid is going to get stitched up like a kipper somewhere done the line.

Btw could anyone please point me to any decent bands with actual black records out who play Squier water transmogrified into Fender wine.

D

*when i first wanted an electric guitar I could only have dreamed of a Squier or any new guitar, I would probably have worn the logo off through polishing it. I had £15 and flea market to shop in (Indian Restaurant finish Hofner Galaxie).

I personally wouldn't do it. For a number of reasons, first of all I'm completely alright with Squier or Epiphone. Back when I actually started getting into rock, it was Oasis and I always saw Noel's Epis in the 90's and I didn't know shit about guitar. The reference just stuck with me and in all honesty I even prefer the Epi logo and headstock, specially on the semi hollows.

As for Squier, I'm really ok with it, the shape of the headstock is what matters most for me.

But I don't know, if I changed a Squier logo for a Fender, that would feel tacky in my hands, everytime I would see that logo, I would think about the fact it's not a Fender.

Niiiiiice! 8)

and re: the logo thing, partscaster/scratchbuild, yes sure, just trying to make a squier look more expensive, absolute no.

Some people lose their mind over this, but I don't understand why. I wouldn't care unless you tried to pass it off as a Fender to raise the selling price. If you like it better with Fender logo then I say go for it. It's your guitar.

I did put a Fender Strat decal in the headstock .. I didn't have to , I will never play the guitar outside of the home.
But to my eye, my "artist/design eye" the headstock shape looks correct with a Fender/strat decal.
When I see a Squier decal on the strat headstock I know what it is, what it means, but it doesn't look correct.

If you are not trying to cheat anyone (ie sell it for what it isn't) then I have no issue with anyone upgrading the decal.
I agree with this, I bought a squier VI and painted the guitar and head of it. I put a fender logo on it, just cause I like the way it looks. I have no plans to sell it, if I did I would take it off. If anyone asks I say its a squier.

Besides, I used spray paint to finish it and the logo isn't put on anywhere near perfect.

I have a tele parts guitar that I made that I just used some other sticker that I had laying around at the time. So no fender logo on that.

I don't mind as long as people are honest about what they have.

I would never do it myself. And I don't really buy the whole thing of not intending to ever sell it as a good excuse. Unless you give the neck a viking funeral, it's going to end up in the hands of someone else someday - whether you do end up selling it, it gets stolen, or someone inherits it after your death.

A fender logo doesn't make you a better player and it doesn't magically impart better quality or tone. If you have to have a real Fender neck for your partscaster, they are easy enough to find these days. If you're embarrassed that a neck says Squier, you can get a custom decal made for about the same price as a Fender decal. And if you are doing a custom build, why would you want to give someone else credit for your hard work?

Here's the neck of my VM Jaguar. I painted the headstock to match and put a Squier logo back on. The only thing I have to feel shame over is the chips by the b tuner and the truss rod hole.

i'm not really into bmw m cars/amg's but i learned how to tell the difference between a normal bmw and the m cars and make it my duty when i see these clones to go up to the owners and say "nice 318" and watch the hate in their eyes. i'm most likely going to get the shit kicked out of me one day for it but while they beat me up, i'll just say "ohhhhh, so you think this is how to make your Pinocchio car a real boy"

It's pretty naff to pass something off as something it isn't. Pass it on to someone else and it's worse than naff.
