An inexpensive acoustic bass guitar

Post by burpgun » Sat Jun 09, 2018 6:30 am

Not sure this is something many of you care about, but anyone have any good experiences with a particular model of acoustic bass guitar under $400? My ancient Kramer Ferrington, which was always a piece of crap, finally imploded, so I need something to practice on and write with. I would never play it out. Seems like there are a lot of offerings but if you’ve got some direct experience I’d like to hear about it.

I have a Godin Acoustibass which cost me $450 used (just to be clear, this is an electric instrument). It has a Baggs pickup but I never thought it sounded like much until I hooked it up to a Fishman Aura pedal. I did this clip with the bass and a Godin solidbody nylon string guitar. Both instruments are using a nylon string guitar image from the Aura and though the playing is not good (I'm faking it...) the sounds are, to me, astounding:

You can find a used Aura guitar pedal (not the new Aura Spectrum) for under $100 and upgrade it to accept the Aura library images for $30.

That Taylor mini-acoustic bass is a bit more than $400 but it's a ton of fun. Never owned one though.

I picked up a Takamine AC/EL Bass a few years ago when we were doing a bunch of acoustic shows. Actually sounded great through my SWR California Blonde.

I will +1 this. I picked up one in GC and couldn't stop playing it. I would buy it except I (unjustifiably) feel acoustic basses are a niche instrument.

I've been looking at some of the Fender and Ibanez offerings at around $400. Most seem to be medium scale. For what it's worth, I don't think I'd ever play out with this thing. It's just to practice on the couch. I got a lot of mileage out of my old Kramer Ferrington, even though it was really badly built.
