MIDI Pickups...
So, I've got an idea for a guitar that involves a fretless (or de-fretted) neck going into Eurorack. There are companies who make neat interface modules, like this envelope follower from the UK company Befaco, called the I² – INSTRUMENT INTERFACE, but what about MIDI pickups? I've never messed with them before, and things like the Roland GK pickup are made for their specific pedal controller/interface. Could they be used as a MIDI pickup into a MIDI interface that's not the Roland interface, say, straight into a Eurorack MIDI input?

I would think so, since MIDI is a universal protocol. I doubt Roland would take something universal like that and tweak it proprietary functionality.

Actually from Roland themselves:
The question often arises as to whether the GR-55 can be used with separate MIDI synths, sound modules or instrument plug-ins. Simply put, the answer is yes as the GR-55 is fitted with MIDI In and Out sockets, and in the studio this is incredibly useful as you can use your standard guitar skills to play software synths and other hardware synths as well as the GR-55’s own internal sounds. Unless your playing is very clean though, you may find some stray, low volume MIDI notes appearing in your recording but it is a simple matter to use the piano roll editor in your DAW to identify and remove these if they’re audible.

Re: MIDI Pickups...
The pickup itself does not output midi, The guitar synth is needed to process and convert the output of the pickup into midi data. From there it can control anything with midi in as inLimbo said.
I am unaware of anyone who make an actual midi pickup, but either it or an audio midi pedal is likely to be showing up in the near future.

Logic gates based on billiard-ball computer designs have also been made to operate using live soldier crabs of the species Mictyris guinotae in place of the billiard balls.

Oig is correct, I completely misread Shadow's last question.
There is a device that's relative inexpensive that could work - Sonuus G2M. Basically converts the guitar signal to MIDI information.
Supposedly low latency, but I dunno.

Re: MIDI Pickups...
Interesting. I definitely don't want to invest in the whole synth system from them. That's too bad. Maybe I'll just use the standard output jack into that module, and see what happens Thanks for the quick responses guys!!
