NBD Ibanez ATK

Post by HNB » Thu Feb 15, 2018 7:36 pm

One of the bands I follow on Instagram were recording in studio and their bass player was switching between to different basses that looked all kinds of cool and I hadn't seen one before. The big metal bridge plate and the huge looking pickup especially caught my eye. You guys know I am a sucker for cool metal bridges. I asked him what they were and he said they were Ibanez ATK's.

So... now I have one. The funny thing is I play bass way better than guitar. I actually performed with bass in high school and took lessons and such. I don't really own many basses though. (Still under five.) Aside from the looks, when I read up on it, it seemed like a great bass for me to try out since it is supposed to be sort of the opposite of the Sound Gear. (Which was my first bass and I still have it.) I love that bass and it seemed neat to have another Ibanez that was different for variety. There are lots of different ones and for various prices. I found this one and grabbed it almost instantly because of the special features. I guess it is one of those limited edition or something ones. It has an engraved solid metal pickguard that is distressed. The bridge is also engraved and distressed as is the other metal parts on the guitar. I love that look and the engraving looked cool. The black color was also pretty appealing. The active eq options on it are pretty cool. There is bass, mid, and treble controls and a master volume. You can sort of boost each or cut each from the notched in center position. The mini toggle goes between different types of pickup sounds. (Traditional, Bright, and Attack is what Ibanez calls them.)

Here are some dark pics. (It is night time here...)

I would love to try one of those sometime.

What I love is the triple bucker! There's a Hamer with that boring Hamer shape, but it has just a triple bucker, which makes me say, "oh yeah"

I always hear these things mentioned when people talk about "Stingray alternatives."

Never gotten my hands on one personally, but congrats - that's a gorgeous bass. I'm also a sucker for huge metal bridges (and for Stingrays), so it sounds right up my alley!

There is nothing about that bass that sucks. Wow.

I've always been really into PJ type deals, but your description of the controls on there has me interested. And that bridge looks plenty skookum. I had an active bass at one point, a Valley Arts, and it was a hell of a good bass but you had to open the back up to change the battery. I always said that if I got another, it'd have its own battery compartment.

So here I am wanting the exact same bass. Wow.

Happy new bass day, HNB!
This is an excellent rectangle

Thanks! The battery compartment is on the back separate from the other cavity. Two machine screws keep the back battery cover on. It supposedly has a preamp trim pot in the control area to adjust gain.

The pickup is soo cool. It is neat seeing something different than a normal P Bass or J Bass pickup. :) The neck is a little wider than my Ibanez SDGR bass. That is what I read about them and I like it. :) Has great sustain with the string through body. Neck is a good shape. Not to thick or thin in my opinion. Tuners work great. Nothing to complain about in my opinion. With all the sound adjustments, I can't see how it wouldn't work for pretty much everyone. You can make it more trebly if that is your thing, or more bassy. There are loads of different sounds between. Having a mid control pot is really cool. Gives even more sound options.

Seems like a bass that can pretty much do whatever someone would want.
