NGD!! 2015 Gibson SGS3

Post by Logan » Thu Feb 08, 2018 10:43 pm

Thanks to another forum, I saw a guitar that I was watching for awhile for a killer price. I pounced.
Image
It's got deep, I mean DEEP bevels. The contors on the sides almost come to a blade on it. It looks stunning with the gold hardware, sideways vibrola, and 3 pickups.
Image
Both my SGs were made 15 days apart. The Ebony was made on October the 21st of 2014 and the Fireburst on November 5th, 2014 (which also happens to be the day me and my girlfriend got together, only in 2017). They are so similar yet couldn't be more different even though they were only made 15 days apart.
Image
Soundwise, through my new Pro Junior it sounds like a Tele on steroids in the standard 3 way toggle positions. With the middle pickup dialed in, it sounds like a Grestch. The 3 '57s are killer pickups, as I already knew from my other SG. The new one is brighter than my old SG, which is refreshing.

But, enough of talking, here's a couple of more pics!

I'm in Marching Band and play Guitar. That's about it, pretty boring, isn't it?

that black SG looks rad!
I never had a Gibson or thoroughly played one, but I guess your SG 3 would be a candidate.
enjoy it.

Beautiful guitar! And this is coming from someone who usually dislikes gold hardware. But the combination of the SG shape, vibrola, 3 pickups and the ebony color really works for me. Congrats!

Happy NGD!

I remember seeing one of these in the wild when they came out - a very cool looking guitar with three pickups and the sideways vibrola.

I really dislike '57 Classics - I usually encounter them on ES guitars where they sound like mush. However, when I've played SGs with '57s they usually sound fantastic. Not sure what it is about that ... but hand me an ES335 with '57s and I won't be happy, but hand me an SG with the same pickup and I'll play it all day.

Bigsby for functionality, and Sideways for looks. The sideways doesn't look like a bad design, but the parts need to be super precise for it to have any chance of staying in tune. It looks absolutely killer, but it doesn't stay in tune. So just don't touch it, and it's good ;)

Me too. It looks great, but sucks in actual use because it isn't made to tight enough specs. It's a simple mechanism that should work if it was machined better. ;D

LOVE SGs.
Do not like 3 humbucker models though. Looks and feels too cramped for me.
Glad you're enjoying them.

I played a 2018 SG Jr yesterday and it was AMAZING. I want it so bad. I'm stuck between the SG Jr and a new AmPro Jazzmaster they got in as well. Tough choice for me. The Jazzmaster was fantastic, but the SG Jr is something I've wanted for a very long time.
It's such a rock n roll beast. That one P90 and the mahogany body and neck just makes such a gnarly tone.
Only Gibsons I've owned have been SGs. I tried to get into Firebirds and tried out an RD Artist recently as well. Find them too unwieldy even from a Jazzmaster players point of view.
