Sam Ash is blowing out the Supro guitars.

Hamptons in Blue or white are 399 (down from 1099) and the Jamesport is 299

I saw that. They're all over reverb for the same price.
I feel bad for anyone trying to move a used one right now. The Hamptons were big money new.

I had high hopes for them when they were first coming out, but they were too expensive, got some early bad press, and were all variants of one basic model.

I was eyeing the Hampton since they came out and bought it last week. I don't know if I lucked out, but I think it is impossible to get a better guitar new for $400. I like everything about it (and the setup was amazing out of the box) except the placement of the volume knob, which is totally bizarre, but not the end of the world.

Well, initially they were going to release before they did. I believe that negative feedback from their first prototypes pushed the date back and they released the models they have now. While these models look a lot better than the prototypes, they still dropped the ball by not reproducing the originals. They modernized things too much.

Well crap.
I couldn't take it anymore. Mekhem, I blame you for posting this PSA without regard for my financial well-being.
SamAsh's website was a little weird, so I started searching by model and found one of the reso-glas Belmonts for 299, with free shipping.
They were close to $1k, I think, when they first came out.
45 day return policy...
Should be here this week, i'll let you know if it sux.
I have a bunch of old supros, i'm curious to see how it compares.
Thanks, kinda.

no idea, really.
the Supro name has a new owner. They started with the amps, which i think were pretty well-recieved.
They seem to have followed the same path as the guy who tried to bring Harmony back (last i heard, he ended up living in his truck).
Over-estimating the market, and going MIC.
the one i bought is from the much-maligned "Americana" series.
I suspect someone spending a $1000 might have more to complain about than I will.
the originals were not perfect...

Yeah, I don't know if they became overconfident with the success of the amps or what. They could have had a hit with these guitars if they did a bit of pricing/market research.

I had one of the Harmony reissues (the Rocket). They did not do a good job with these guitars. I also had several reproductions from Eastwood. The Supro I bought is an order of magnitude better than these instruments. The pickups alone are enough (apparently designed by Ken of Roadhouse pickups). The one I got is made in Indonesia, while the Americana series is made in China :-/ I have no hangups on COM as long as the guitars are good. In this case the guitar is an absolute steal for $400.

The reviews on the Americana guitars are mixed (there is a very long thread on TGP), but there are definitely a few people who really love theirs. I hope yours is good too!

The Harmony reissues made no sense. I could buy this new reissue for the same price as the real deal

same thing is true of these. The Eastwood/Airline 59 guitars are $1000, i bought my Jack White Airline for less.
I own a '61 Ozark (the orange guitar the new Supros are patterned after) that I bought on ebay for less than $500.
They're just not valuable enough to make $ producing expensive reissues.
O
If i'm honest, i'm kinda excited about the new guitar. I read that Trev Wilkinson was involved in these.
I had a 'Vintage' guitar for a while, and it was great. My buddy has a pair of 'Fret-King' guitars that are superb. Both those companies belonged to him, i think..

I had also forgotten about the Roadhouse connection.

I am looking forward to the Pickups. That is what was interesting to me initially when these came out which was over powered by my dislike of jumbo frets. At this price point its worth a shot

I did a bit of digging into these Supro reissues earlier this year - I played one of the solid body reissues (I think it was a Hampton) and really liked it ... but it was 1,000 euro and that's a lot to pay for what they are!

It seems that the resoglass and solid body guitars are made in different factories by different OEM companies. The solid body guitars have pretty good QC overall ... but I've read some horror stories with the Rez-o-glass models. Finishing seems to be patchy - just attention to detail ... stuff you can't excuse on a guitar that's over a grand new.

I decided not to pick one up earlier this year - I'm sort of keeping an eye out for an old Danelectro at the right price to scratch that itch instead. That being said those blow out prices are pretty decent for the solid body models - the ones I played were lovely guitars right out of the box.
