NGD: Rickenbacker 1993 Plus

Post by Straight6DOHC » Mon Dec 11, 2017 3:43 am

I was hugely dissapointed when I auditioned a Ric 360/12 due to the narrow neck. I've a 330/6 and the neck is fine for me, but, cram another 6 strings on there and my fretting hand just kept cramping up. The shop assistant handed me a 1993 Plus, which has a slightly wider neck...but narrower than another 12 sting I have. It was a beautiful guitar and one I could get along with. I just couldn't justify the expense.
That was about 2 years ago. This year I decided to get a 360/12 second hand and convinced myself that, with lots of practice, I'd manage the normal (narrow) 12 string Ric neck. I searched for a few months and was prepared to trade my 330/6, when, I chanced upon a shop selling this Jet-glo 1993 Plus with a favourable price tag.
I've had it a couple of months now and mosly play with metal finger picks & thumbpick, which is new for me, but has been surprisingly easier than I'd thought. The wider string spacing likely helps. It came with 10-46 (too heavy!), but, I've brought that down to 8-40 (too light!). I'll try 9-42 next.
I've considered reversing the E & A pairs around from Ric string placement to the usual string placement, but, I need to A-B that with my other 12 just to see how much the Ric string placement effects the sound.
Anyway...here it is.

That is classy! If I were to get a 12 string, that would be it. How do you like the toaster pickups? I’ve never played a RIC that had them but understand that they sound great.

They do sound great. That said, I've never played any other toaster pickup. These are 'vintage reissue' and I understand that Pete Townsend wanted Ric to build a guitar to his specs, but, based on what he played back in the sixties. I have no idea how much like the old toasters these ones sound like, but, I'd be interested to know if anyone has played the various toasters Ric has produced.

Man, Jetglo with white binding and that sharkfin inlays makes for the classiest Rickenbacker out there. Hell, one of the classiest guitars out there.

Congrats, man.

Wonderful guitar. Good fortune to find one with the neck you like on there.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

IIRC, the 1993Plus has been made for Pete Townshend, because he asked Rickenbacker to make a 12 string for him with a wider neck, to bring on the latest The Who tour. Same story for the 660/12 for Tom Petty. Those are the only 2 instances where Rickenbacker has listened to the complaints about the 12-string necks being too narrow for comfort. The ego and "we know best" of John Hall & co disgust me :k

But nice guitar, and the only RIC-12 that I could get to work for me.

Agreed on both counts. My favourite cosmetics for a Ric. Been ogling a 4003 in the same getup.

Looks incredibly chic, you're a very lucky guy. However I'd lose that stupid sticker pronto, it's like leaving the brand tag on your RTW suit cuff. :)

Vote for removal.

Logos of any kind tend to get on my nerves, especially graphic tees, cars with the air filter brand stuck in the window.

The headstock logo is enough, just like a hood ornament or the badge on the back. Anything outside of that is self indulgent.

In our house we often joke (concerning minimal style); 'what would Coco do' (not fuck a Nazi ;) ) based on this quote; “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”

The reverse would be 'what would Ric Guy do'. I'd do the exact opposite, especially as he's probably wearing a Rickenbacker teeshirt, cargo shorts and flip flops.

Btw has anyone in a band that actually puts out records you can buy in a shop ever kept the sticker on, or is just forum dudebros?

Yes, it takes a special sort of idiot to slather their car with adverts for it's parts (if they aren't racing and getting paid for the advertising).

You know folk can do what they like but preserving that sticker is like the old folk who collected Beanie Babies and got special plastic sleeves for the TY tags.

+1 on ditching the sticker. I think I posted in another thread recently how it basically screams "I'm a pedantic, overly vocal Rickenbacker fanboy". Cool guitar though!

So cool and pretty. One of the few times Rickenbacker actually listened to their customers when they made this model. Lovely in black.

For the normal 12 strings, the nit can be adjusted to give a little more room but not the same thing. Congrats.
