Oh, I remember those. "V2", wasn't it?

Yep. You just disappeared right into the maw of Norlin with that. You didn't even fuck around with a Marauder for a while, you went right for the most extreme, over the top thing produced in an extreme, over the top era, didn't you?
Next up: Les Paul Recording.

Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

There is also the Invader, which was another weird bolt on, stripped down Les Paul type thing. There were a lot of them. Probably very hot pickups.
And the Invader probably straddles ground between the Firebrand stuff, which I don't think sold all that well and the concept was probably not all that clear, either. But they are universally described as excellent guitars, and you're not likely to find one for cheap.
Shortly after the Invader came the Les Paul Studio, which was a genuine attempt to get a real Les Paul with the carved top and set neck in the hands of anyone who could afford it.
That meant the Invader and stuff was pretty moot, and the Juskiewicz era killed off any bolt on Gibsons pretty much once and for all. A shame, though. They did them very well.

The Les Paul Recording has always intrigued me, but the features that make it so whacky don't really mean much to me. Those boomerang split-coils on the V2 just check all the boxes for me.
Unfortunately, it seems that it's fairly well-appreciated as a model. They don't go cheap. Would definitely need to play one for a good long while before pulling that trigger.

Yeah, that guitar is very collectible and probably always was. They didn't make a lot of them, you'll be paying a pretty high price I'd imagine.
But think of how people will talk!

Re: New guitar day- anybody want to guess?
I'm not under the impression that anyone is dying for more information about these guitars, but I have it anyway:
So the pickup in the Challenger is, in fact, Alnico V.
It also sounds very good. I pulled the thing apart and shielded the cavities and the pickguard, and lo and behold, it is now a very quiet guitar.
I'm not all that sure what shielding it had, if any. There were three discs underneath the pickguard where the tone and volume controls are, I assume they were some kind of shielding, and one underneath that output jack.
I didn't even bother to see if they were conductive or ran to ground. They were doing such a bad job, if they were, that I just steamrolled over them with copper tape.
No more information about the pickup from having seen it. It's all encased in black plastic and probably epoxy. You can't see anything about it. Just a wire running into the black.

Re: New guitar day- anybody want to guess?
My first Gibson was a GK-55, which was effectively a bolt-on Special with humbuckers. I got it in 1990. It had two volumes, a master tone, and a rotary coil split. It was a very good guitar. I killed one of the pickups accidentally in 1995ish and sent it, at the suggestion of my local repairman, to Lindy Fralin. He rewound it and sent back a hand-drawn wiring diagram, along with a note about how exciting it was to come across weird Norlin models and get the chance to examine them.
I sold it to fund a real Special, which I still play today. I miss the GK-55, but I’ve gotten so many great miles out of my Special that I can’t really say I regret the sale. A friend from Austin named Carter Thornton still has it up in NYC, but I don’t know if he’s gigging it. If you see his name on a flier, go see him and get back to me on it.
Not my photo, but same model:
