Butterscotch Ash MJT Stratocaster Finished Pg. 2

Post by HNB » Sun Oct 15, 2017 6:39 pm

Hey all! I have been on a strat kick but wanted to build a noiseless option that still had good strat sounds. I found this MJT body on ebay and got it cheap.

I still had this neck from my MJT Jazzmaster I traded so it seemed like a perfect match. I found out that those Grover tuners I had picked up for my Squier Jazzmasters that didn't fit right actually fit this neck correctly. Pretty stoked. I do need another string tree, but the neck is great. Even has flame.

I picked these up used for pretty cheap. I liked the sound of the Lace Gold pickups in the demos I heard online. Sounded pretty stratty but noiseless. We will see.

I have a white Stratocaster guard that should work. I will age it slightly by using steel wool to dull it matte and then adding a little stain to it to yellow it a bit.

Parts I still need to get:

500k pots (I hear that opens up the lace pickups.)
Switch
Bridge
Back Spring Assembly
Straplocks
Jack and Jack Plate
Knobs

Not too much needed to get this all together. :D Nice to have a project to work on again.

Love it! I've never used any of the Lace Sensors, but I've been really curious about the EMG DG20 Strat set

From what I read, unless you have a battery box on the back, they are a pain because of replacing the battery under the guard.

If you've ever liked Doug Martsch's tone on any of the Built to Spill albums, you'll like the middle position on this guitar - his strat Plus has gold Lace sensors and he plays exclusively on the middle pickup.

There's also Clapton and Jeff Beck as prominent Lace Sensor users, but to the surprise of no one on the forum, Doug's tone is more what I enjoy out of those three...

Since I don't buy guitars off the rack (lefty), it wouldn't be a problem. If I decide to get a set at some point, I'd absolutely route a battery box in there somewhere.

Stained the pickguard after taking the gloss off with synthetic steel wool. Oak on the top to kind of yellow it and walnut on the edge to give it a dirty look. Also scratched up the edge of the guard in a couple places.

I had been looking for a white or blonde body when that popped up. It is almost a dead ringer for my ash Jazzy MJT made for me wear wise. <3

The cream knobs arrived. I sanded them a little bit like the guard and then rubbed on some walnut stain to give them a dirty look.

Image

The pickups came in. I learned that they are supposed to all be the same and that there is no rwrp middle pickup with lace pickups. I guess since they are hum cancelling and they are all gold I can put any of them in any spot. I used the multimeter and found they are slightly different so I will do: 5.85 in the neck, 5.88 in the middle, and 5.9 in the bridge.

Waiting for the body to make sure the guard matches up right and then I can wire the guard up. (I also want to make sure the guard isn’t tacky from stain anymore also.... so it doesn’t hurt to wait.)
