Calling SGeniuses. Need help ID'ing an SG.

Post by mkt3000 » Thu Oct 05, 2017 12:58 pm

I just found this on offerup for dirt cheap, and I'm trying to ID it.

Seller says it's a refin (which I believe 100%) - just trying to figure out what kind of SG this is.

I know absolutely nothing about SGs but I'll be amazed if that pickguard is stock.

I'll be even more amazed if it's a real Gibson. I'm kind of getting a "modified '70s Japanese copy" kind of vibe from it, however it does appear to have a set neck so who knows.

I asked the seller for more info, and he deflected - so I'm backing off.

This is giving me a highly modified Maestro DC by Gibson Vibe.

Headstock is too big and neck too wide into the body. This isn't a Gibson. My guess is something like this:

Yeah, the headstock is big so I was thinking maybe a Norlin guitar, but there's no volute on the neck, so that's wrong.

SGs typically have four knobs, this has three. SGs have never had a pickguard like that I've ever seen.

I don't know what it is, but I bet I know what it's not. Skip.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

It could be an 83 gibson SG special? See this thread

Headstock is the same size as the 70s SG1 and SG2 and SG Pro models:

But those models had no 'german carve' to the body horns:

That, combined with the home-made pickguard and the way it all looks makes me almost 100% sure it's not a Gibson.

The three knob control layout is suspect.

Seller ended up taking the ad down, and relisting it as an "epiphone with a gibson style headstock", and took it down again.

100% NOT a Gibson.

The most glaring issues...

1. That neck/heel joint. What the HELL is that>!>>!>!>!

2. The truss rod access area - it's the standard Asian-manufactured shape, not the "bullet" or "suppository" shape employed by Gibson and most USA set-neck builders.
