SOON: NGD of happiness (tele content)

Post by preservation » Tue Sep 05, 2017 9:04 am

i've long wanted a tele with a punchy humbucker in the neck & a twangy vintaged-voiced singe in the bridge.
the idea was to string it up with .12s and rip it up.

past few weeks i've been toying with the idea of putting together a MJT-style build, but sourcing/pricing all the components can take a while and add up $-wise.
the most recent build was going to be about $700-800 (not bad, but still sort of pricey for an unplayed axe).

then i stumbled upon this tele on Reverb. i like black guitars, but originally i was hoping for a slightly "reliced"/faded 3-tone burst or LPB.
then i thought, "hey, what if i simply take those pieces of flair off that top bout and if i really hate the body i can change it down the line."

here's are the stats:

-7.55 lbs
- thin Maple V Neck, graphite nut (this is a tossup for me but worth a shot, i like all necks but favor super FAT ones)
-Ash Body (finish is stated as "less than desirable", whatever that means. if it needs to be refinished i can do that myself).
-Joe Barden Bridge
-Glendale Saddles
-Seymour Duncan Five-Two Bridge Pickup
-Seymour Duncan '59 Neck Humbucker
-4-Way Tele Mod Switch
-Vintage Style Tuners
-F Logo on headstock

$440 SHIPPED w/ HARDSHELL CASE
how do you pass that up ?!??!

i figure that if i really can't hang with a black body & thin maple neck i'll eventually just sell those parts and
buy the body/neck i originally intended to end up with. at least this way i'm saving a shitload on pickups & parts.

i am BEYOND PSYCHED

well, good news. the tele is a keeper.

PROS:

soft V shape neck, a bit of natural distressing/play wear. very thin compared to what i'd typically pick out, but surprisingly quite comfy.
i think i'll sit back and enjoy it instead of running off to buy a baseball bat neck, at least for now.
these no-name vintage-style tuners are very smooth and hold tune really well w/ the graphite nut. neck fits perfectly in the body; you couldn't even attempt to slip a piece of paper in there.

great hardware, great pickups, and a useful 4-way Tele switch WHICH i'd highly recommend. apparently the mod requires very little work.
this tele sounds punchy and clear, and lends itself to choppier playing in the way Teles do.

CONS:

HOLY HUM. big-time pickup shielding issue. getting it fixed today. no biggie, just annoying that it's not playable right out of the case.

also, PU selector switch got bent against the body in shipping (NOTHING inside the case was stuffed or padded. at all).
seller claims "it was fine when it left !"
meh- i got such a good deal on it that i can't whine. karma and all that.

it's got a real 80's alt rock vibe to it. like something the replacements would have played. i dig it...... dare i say it has..... mojo?
