LTD EC-1000 Koa

Post by HNB » Sun Sep 03, 2017 8:20 pm

If you read my Agile 3200 post, you already know it came in, had a finish blemish, so I decided to return it. Kurt said that finish issues like that are pretty normal for his guitars because they are lower cost and more budget friendly. I decided I would go to Guitar Center and check out the Epiphone Les Pauls they had to see if any seemed good and maybe see if there were any other Les Paul-ish guitars to try out. I saw a Jackson that was ok. I tried a honey top Epiphone that was pretty good also. I went over to the used area and saw a koa LTD Les Paul looking type guitar and had them grab the ladder to let me check it out.

Things I noticed right away. More of a pointed horn than the Agile which I like. The headstock shape is pointy and kind of interesting. The koa top was really nice looking. It had black binding and looked like ebony for the fretboard. Three knobs instead of Gibson's four. Black hardware. Looked like Mahogany in the back and possibly the neck also but the neck was five piece with a valute. It had locking tuners that were small, but seemed nice. The pickups were Duncan. (Not Duncan Designed.) It was up for $699 used and they took $30 off for me. Pickups sounded good through the Fender amps on the floor and electronics worked well.

Once I got home, I looked up the full specs.

Price $1,499 SRP $999. (Nice discount considering the plastic film is still on all the plastic parts!)
Mahogany Back with Koa Top. Black Binding on the body, neck, and headstock. Bubinga and Mahogany set-through neck with Ebony fretboard. (I guess it is like a neck through but set in a channel the length of the body.) Seymour Duncan Jazz neck humbucker and Custom 5 bridge humbucker. Tonepros TOM and tailpiece. Vol/Vol/Tone controls.

Here are the pictures!

Chris, first a strat now a les paul? Do we need to have an intervention?! :P

It looks really nice. LTD is actually a really great brand. My buddy had a top end LTD, and the neck was one of the best set necks I’ve played.

Glad you are enjoying it.

Absolute beauty! I've always loved EC's, even a little more than LP's. Those necks are killer! About how hot are the pickups though?

I love the pickups. I acutally put Jazz neck humbuckers in most guitars. That and the Anniversary PAF are my two favorite neck humbuckers. Bridge pickups, I normally do JB's or Super Distortions. Sometimes Atomic Humbuckers. The Custom 5 has a great rock sound to me. Kind of makes me think of AC-DC if you use it with a little overdrive. :)

I switched the stock strap buttons with dual design straplocks and was amazed at how long the stock screws were. Never seen ones this long for strap buttons!

The LTD is looking nice with its dark green leather strap with black strap locks. :D
