Normal Les Paul's have a volume for each pickup so it should work?Shadoweclipse13 wrote:I've tried that and it has never worked for me. Someone told me that you have to wire the pots like a Jazz Bass (backwards from each other), otherwise one will always act like a master volume.

Cooterfinger made this body to replace the badly damaged original but I think he copied it.

Re: 1979 Gibson Marauder Project
I always wondered about that. I've never messed wit Les Pauls, but that's how I wired my Tele, and one of them acts as master. I'd love to be wrong and find out that I could get that out of my Tele though!HNB wrote:Normal Les Paul's have a volume for each pickup so it should work?Shadoweclipse13 wrote:I've tried that and it has never worked for me. My tele deluxes had separate volumes that worked. You run the pickup to the volume pot and then to the toggle. Toggle out goes to the jack.

Wetsanded the body today, wired the guard, and assembled it. I will pick up strings tomorrow.

Looks great... I can't wait to hear what you think of it!

Those machine neck screws were no joke. My hands are still shakey. They were hard to screw in. LOL

Re: 1979 Gibson Marauder Project
Well I got the strings on and the E strings won't stay in the nut. They keep popping out. I don't know what Gibson was thinking with this tuner design where they angle out from the nut instead of going straight over. I ordered a new nut. I will have to see how it goes. I DO like the sound of the strings I can play. The neck pickup is much louder than the bridge. I am guessing the bridge is single coil and the neck is humbucker, so I guess that is to be expected. Man I am disappointed on the nut.

Oh man, that is the stuff of nightmares.
What about a couple string trees screwed into the headstock face to sort of act as mediary on the steep angle?

Re: 1979 Gibson Marauder Project
I think you just need to sort the nut. I don't have that problem on my Marauder, although I do agree that Gibson's commitment to the angled string pull past the nut idea is weird.
Regarding whether the bridge pickup is a single coil or a humbucker, I honestly don't know. I researched it and heard both things. I looked at it very closely, and couldn't tell. It looks kind of like a stacked humbucker, which is maybe what it is.
Like I say, I find the bridge pickup to be pretty much only useful as a blend into the neck. The neck pickup I find to be amazing, like nothing I've heard on any other instrument.
Hope you get it all sorted and grow to feel the same way!

Re: 1979 Gibson Marauder Project
I will give the new nut a try. I am also going to use 10's instead of 11's with the hope it sits in the slots better. 10's seem to be Gibson's default. If those don't work, I will do two string trees to help hold the buggers in place.

Re: 1979 Gibson Marauder Project
Is it also possible that the tuners are sitting higher than they should? I'll take a look at my Marauder when I get home, if I recall, the tuners (I put on new locking tuners) are very low to the pegboard. Are yours sitting fairly high?
Even if so, I'll still blame the nut slots, though.

Zoomed right into the photo and see you haven't really got anything wound round the machinehead on the low E string at least. If you have like, 3 or 4 turns wound round the peg you can make sure the final one is lowest and it sort of acts like a string tree...would have thought that would do it... I've got a guitar with a similar situation and that's always sorted it for me- plus a bit of tinkering with the nut

Yeah I didn't have a ton of winds with the low e. I mostly had that set on to help me center and glue the nut on, but the strings kept popping out when I would tighten them. LOL

Re: 1979 Gibson Marauder Project
aaah and just looked at a pic of a marauder cos I'm curious about this...I reckon they came with tuners with a much shorter spindle

What exactly is it that is wrong with the nut? I'm struggling to imagine what sort of nut would help in this situation

Re: 1979 Gibson Marauder Project
The grooves in the nut were too shallow and the nut was also too wide I think. Hopefully the graphtech one I order will do better. I am not getting different tuners. I will do string trees if the new nut doesn't work.
