My Rickenbacker recipe of the day

Post by CS » Sat Jul 15, 2017 3:49 am

One Rickenbacker 330 generally unloved and unused ( I think Zhivago has played it more than I have) add one Matchless LIghtning and two broken in Alnico Tone Tubbies.

Play Tom Petty/Wiburys tunes

Smile

That is all unless you want to add some recipes of your own non Ric included.

Sounds like a great setup Chris! That 330 is great...it's just that your other Ric, the 360 is well...30 better! :D :)

Lol it is 30 better. When we had them side by side the 360 had way more jangle. Thing is when I'm looking to sell a guitar I play it. So I'm not selling the 330 any time soon

They are definitely different enough sonically so keeps them. We need two Rics for our impromptu blues jams! 8)

I like Rickenbackers! I've had a couple 360s which sounded and played great, but I just never felt like they were "me" for some reason. I have a 330/12 now and it was the one. I love that thing! It's apples to oranges since my 360s were both 6s and the 330 a 12 (and 20 years older than the 360s), but it feels more resonant and alive. It isn't as focused either. It's more like a real hollowbody. I owned an old Fender XII for a long time, but the 330/12 just plain sounds better IMO.

The Matchless Lightning part of the equation could probably make damn near anything sound amazing, I bet! I've always wanted one. The shop where I took lessons as a kid was a dealer. I still have a mid '90s catalog that I used to drool over.

My old 360, a 1985 fireglow model, seemed to have more jangle than the 360v64 from '97 that I have now. I wonder if it's the carved top instead of the double bound flat top that gives it more top end?

I like mine through an AC-30 with a Colorsound Overdriver clone and a Deluxe Memoryman.

I have always wanted, but have never played a Ric; that set up sounds nice, and jangly though. How are the necks on them girth wise?

Since reading this I've had the Roy Orbison part into the Tom Petty & Bob Dylan part of, " Handle With Care ", stuck in my head.

They get a lot stick for toothpick necks, but both my 330 and 360 just have fairly normal slim and thin feeling necks. I think the difference is that the string spacing can be quite narrow and the necks mostly stay the same width all the way up to the neck joint rather than flaring out. They're quite a 'stiff' guitar but I like that sometimes; I really dig the low frets and varnished fretboard too. The bridge can be a bitch to set up.

They're not impossible to play leads on or anything, but they do make you work a bit harder for certain sounds and styles. I probably wouldn't take it to a working covers gig where I need to cop a dozen different styles, but I play in a DEVO tribute and have only ever used Ricks without any issues. My 330 into an AC30 with a RAT for feedback moments is my favourite rock rhythm sound. Absolutely massive on powerchords but lots of definition so you can hear the notes, then when you kick in the boost it turns into total howling mayhem on tap.

I've got a 620 (2012) that sounds and plays like a mini Les Paul. Very middy, focused, and aggressive, not what you'd expect when you think of a Ric. Love it for playing lead. My 360 (1988) has the aforementioned toothpick neck, almost feels like a high quality 60s Silvertone type neck profile-wise, so it's better suited for rhythm and textural stuff. It's not impossible to play lead on, it's just not effortless as it would be on a guitar with wider string spacing.

As for jangle, they're both surprisingly dark in the neck/middle positions, and can cover a lot of ground once you've decoded the how the blend knob works. They're versatile and well-built guitars that will give up the goods if you're patient enough to learn their strengths and limitations. If you're looking for a glassy and rich clean tone (middle position), they're fantastic. I'll go out on a limb and say they might even sound better than a lot of Fenders I've played.

I thought I would add a Ric update.

I've been 'will I wont I' on selling the 330 and against conventional wisdom I have been playing it a lot. To point where the 360 isnt getting played at all. Now Zhivago has this this (which I agree with) that guitars get better the more you play them. So I got out the 360 and ABd it with the 330. The 330 is a lot closer in sound now. I really cant get rid of either.

Off to play Handle With Care now.

Sounds delicious! Unfortunately, I am in the camp that thinks Rick's have toothpick necks.I love everything about Rick's, except the neck. I look at a Rick & instantly want to play it. They are gorgeous and sound so great, but then feel that neck and know something is wrong. It's like finally hooking up with a beautiful woman, but feeling like you just kissed your sister!

I do know what you mean. For some time I have been of the opinion that one has to put up with foibles. THe Ricks have thin necks. my LP doesnt like staying in tune. I've had a love hate relationship with an Ovation Acoustic but it's a brute of a guitar when strummed hard.
