88 Gibson LP Custom
Hi all,
Going to collect an 88 LP Custom this afternoon for $1200. Advertised as excellent condition/all original. Local market sales are a bust in my area and guy NEEDs to sell to fix a vehicle.
Anything I could be on the lookout for regarding this year of manufacture?

Nothing unusual for that year and model. Just look for the ordinary stuff you would with any guitar. But unless it's a totally unplayable rotting heap of wood, that price is a steal.
You can double your money anywhere on it, even ebay. I'd be suspicious of a fake or stolen or something.

Guys asking price was significantly higher and he doesn't want to ship. Says he is getting out of music and needs $ for his truck.Heartland wrote:Nothing unusual for that year and model. I know it's a deal and have had several LPs in the past so I know what to look for regarding fakes. This one includes the chainsaw case.

Make sure it's not a Chibson, that is, a chinese-made gibson copy. You'd be surprised how good they have gotten at cloning guitars.

Anything specific to look for, as I'm meeting the guy in an hour? In the pics he's submitted the guitar looks identical to other models made the same year.Bert Camenbert wrote:Make sure it's not a Chibson, that is, a chinese-made gibson copy. Ive never seen someone put a fake in a chainsaw case, and never seen a fake chainsaw case either. If the guitar looks age/wear appropriate for the case, its probably real.

Got the Custom! Uploading some pics now and will share once completed. No mystery with this one. Guy wanted cash for other interests...

Nice score pineder!
I had (I think) an '86 that was identical to that one.
Does it have those Lawrence circuit board humbuckers? Those were the first thing to come out of mine - I just couldn't get a decent sound out of the muddy and horrible neck pickup. I'm not sure when they stopped those and went to the 490R/498T combo that they're still using for Customs ... but it would have been late '80s so hopefully you have those instead.

Woah! Great sunburst. My high school music teacher had an eighties Custom that ruled pretty hard.
