Best non-Fender Bass ever?
In celebration of my 4001st post, I would like to open a discussion on the Rickenbacker 4001 (and 4003).
Is there a sexier bass?
Is there a more gnarly pick style tone out there?
Name some players, name some songs.
Let's discuss the 4001/4003

Iconic looks, iconic sound... But the ergonomics of an anchor... I can't be friends with that sharp transition on the front due to the binding, which your forarm always scrapes due to the model of the body. The 4001S is better in that regard.

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Re: Best non-Fender Bass ever?
That's my '73 Fireglow. Always liked the sound. Seems like the prog-rockers liked it as much as the proto-metallists did. Yes, Genesis, Marillion vs Möterhead and Black Sabbath. I got mine in the mid '80s when Kim Gordon and Mike Mills were rocking them as were a lot of post punk bands.
My two favorite bass; however, are the Fender Jazzbass and Musicman Stingray. So here's to the Stingray. As used by Ride, Slowdive, Pulp, the Cure, and Radiohead; it could cut through the densest goth, dreampop, ambient or shoegaze mix you wanted to throw at it. A beast of a bass. All my favorite bands that weren't using a Jazzbass in those days all seemed to play Stingrays.

Nice 360OS as well. A model that recently started to grow on me.

Re: Best non-Fender Bass ever?
I wanted one primarily because I grew up on early R.E.M., but when I got a chance to play one in the late '80s, I realized I might never get along with them. This has been confirmed repeatedly over the years - the bridge is all wrong for my playing. I felt vindicated when Mike Mills switched to P-Basses. Either way, a whole big pile of my favorite records were cut with Ricks, and I still love the sound... and they look so damn .

I came here to cast my vote for the Höfner Club Bass...
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

I thought this thread was going to be about G&L's bass offerings, like the one Larry just bought.

I like the look and sound of Rickenbacker but that bridge and bridge pickup... Nope. Completely makes the bass near impossible for me to play.

I thought so too. Maybe I'll start a thread on those, I've done a fair amount of research into them lately and know more than I ever have.andy_tchp wrote:I thought this thread was going to be about G&L's bass offerings, like the one Larry just bought.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.
