NGD: a Junior and a RIC had a VERY good looking baby...
...and it was called the Prairiewood Fox!
Hello all!
I'd like to tell you about how much fun I'm having with my new guitar from Rob Dixon of Prairiewood Guitars.
Here's the lowdown:
-one piece mahogany neck with big slab of a rosewood fretboard. It has what appear to be maple fret makers, too. It has a soft v profile going from about .90 in. to about 1 in. in depth. This makes chording further up the neck a breeze for me and should I want to play a melody, it's easy to move my fingers around the fretboard.
-one piece mahogany body with a German carve a la the old RIC Combo 800.
-Fralin biscuit pickup at the neck position. Very full frequency and beautiful. Wolfetone Meaner P90 a the bridge. With the volume dialed back, this is lovely, too, but definitely shines at pushing the amp and bringing the rock. My Princeton reverb has never sounded so dirty without the help of a pedal!
-DeLisle Pentatone varitone switch for extra fun. Position 4 is a great scooped rhythm sound.
It hangs on a strap very well and makes me want to play more. What more could I ask for? Sorry about the quality of the pics. It was the best I could do while the kids were napping!

Thanks for the kind words! I'm actually going through a bit of withdrawal right now as work and parenthood have kept me too busy to play for the last 24 hours.

Glad you like it! I'm a fan of Bobby Nelson's aesthetic sensibility for sure. I looked into Nelson, Fano, and Prairiewood when I discovered that all three offered something in this body style. Ultimately, it was the mode of construction (solid mahogany with a set neck), pickup selections (these sound NICE and I've never seen the biscuits on another guitar), and ability to customize the color to the nth degree that sold me on the Prairiewood. Rob Dixon's a super nice guy to boot.

Someone buy my Nelson on Reverb so that I can buy the St. Vincent! (The for sale thread is also here on OSG).

That's gorgeous. I like it even more than Fano's take on that shape.

Thanks, Maggie! Having ogled a few of your guitars on this forum, I know that you are someone with discriminating tastes. I saw this guitar and immediately thought it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen. Oh, it sounds really awesome too. I'm currently trying to figure out the perfect amp to build as its companion, but that's a topic for another thread...

I always liked the Combo body. On the one hand, if the patent haden't expired maybe Rickenbacker would have kept building them. On the other hand, builders like Nelson have made some seriously cool guitars as a result. I wish Warmoth had a body like this, the 'Velocity' is similar but not quite.

I've been wondering about those Fralins and have toyed with having Rick Kelly build me a Bowery Pine version of the baseball bat Harmony Stratotone, like Ribot plays.
The Nelsons are interesting, too. Especially the hollow (smei-hollow?) body and their pickups. I wonder if I could get one with a Mastery Ric bridge and trem...
