For the past couple months, I've been itching for another Gretsch to fill the void and add to my arsenal of guitars. The Gretsch Viking had really caught my attention, as there weren't many other models that were double cutaways with real f-holes in colors other than walnut stain or orange (looking at you, Country Gent and Nashville models). This got me searching for a while, and somehow I ended up finding this image of Duane Eddy playing his dyna equipped, baritone double cut.
This led me on a search for the past month for a black double cut 6120, which turns out to not exist, aside from a couple of vintage one offs here and there. In another post I'd made, someone mentioned getting the 5422 ltd in black and gold (if available) and swapping the pickups for dynas. That very day, I found one on Reverb and almost pulled the trigger, but decided that GAS was getting the best of me. It sold within the week, and I haven't seen one since.
The search continued as it felt like a challenge of sorts, although I'd resigned to the fact that I would likely not find one or own one anytime soon since it was a limited model.
I gave up looking because I didn't need another guitar and decided that one will pop up eventually, sometime in the future, and that it wasn't worth wasting my time scouring the internet for one at the moment.
I walked into Atlanta Discount Music today to play with some pedals and see if there was anything I should add to my rig, lo and behold, on the wall, was this exact guitar. New, with tags, at a discounted price. All I could do was laugh, as this seemed way too coincidental to ignore.
I played it for an hour through a vintage blackface Princeton Reverb and ended up taking it home, along with a TKL case with a broken latch that they threw in for $19.
It's going to get a V-cut gold bigsby, TV Jones T-armonds (filter mount), and a brass Compton bridge as soon as I have the funds to make it happen.
So far, I'm pleased with it. It needs to be cleaned and needs some new strings. It's cool to see that Gretsch decided to give these the bound headstock and f-holes, as I remember those being mods people would do to the original 5122s. It's definitely a very different guitar than I've been used to lately, but I'm excited to put it to use. It's pictured above with my recently finished custom parts jazzmaster, my #1 right now.

Congrats! This sounds a lot like a much better version of my very first electric. Unfortunately, I can't see the picture you posted.

Strange, it was there when I viewed it on my laptop, but not on mobile. I'll have to fix that when I get the chance.wproffitt wrote:Congrats! This sounds a lot like a much better version of my very first electric. Unfortunately, I can't see the picture you posted.

Can't argue with that! Well done.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.
