Re: NTBD (Thinline Tele Content)
Also, I'm considering putting a Lollar mini humbucker or Firebird pickup in the neck position...
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

This isn't your only Telecaster, I think?

Huh. Just curious, I've also thought about putting in a Firebird pickup in a Telecaster, but would miss the neck pickup there. You sure you wouldn't?

Re: NTBD (Thinline Tele Content)
I'd personally love a JM neck pickup in there myself, but they're so huge they'd wreck the aesthetic. A firebird pu or even a Charlie Christian is much more reasonable in that space.
That said, I like it the way it is.

Re: NTBD (Thinline Tele Content)
Honestly, I could go either way. I have absolutely no reason to change anything at this point, including the current pickup combination. The Lollar 52s are really fantastic pickups. I suppose this new body is putting me in the mood to tinker, and its physical characteristics are reminding me a bit of Andy Summers' Tele with the Gibson PU in the neck. Also, my house was built in 1969, and still has all the original aluminum wiring, which wreaks havoc on my guitars, which are all single coil. Like I said, just something that was rolling around in my head -- I'm happy to leave it as is. You guys know the type of stuff I play, so I'm mostly into cleans, and bright, sparkly single coil sounds. I've never been a huge humbucker guy.

Re: NTBD (Thinline Tele Content)
Well, you can get clean and sparkly from a good Firebird pickup or mini-humbucker. Have you shielded the guitar? I'm a maniac for that shit and have even been shielding my humbucker equipped guitars.
I would recommend an Ilitch noise reduction system, but you got your fancy pickguard and the ones they have off the shelf don't come in that shape. Maybe he would be able to turn your pickguard into one of his systems, though?

Re: NTBD (Thinline Tele Content)
I think you'd do better with something like a Lollar/Mojo Gold Foil pickup. They're not particularly noisy, from what I understand. Would probably be a good alternative to the Lollar 52, which is near perfect as far as I'm concerned (I have a set in my Tele).
Or, just like, build another Tele...

Interesting idea! The fact the guitar is semi-hollow definitely seems like it would allow space for the extra box. I wonder if you could do the same on a Jazzmaster...Larry Mal wrote: I would recommend an Ilitch noise reduction system, but you got your fancy pickguard and the ones they have off the shelf don't come in that shape. I'm just not the kind of person that wants variations of the same guitar. I prefer to have different instruments that do their thing really well, and uniquely different from its neighbors on my wall. I agree, the 52s are damn near perfect and I don't really have a good reason to change anything. Those goldfoils are nice, though...StevenO wrote:I think you'd do better with something like a Lollar/Mojo Gold Foil pickup. They're not particularly noisy, from what I understand. He told me during a phone call that there was no way he could do a non-invasive mod to a Jazzmaster, it would have to be routed out.Telliot wrote: Interesting idea! But give him a call, he's a wonderful guy.
