NG(retsch)D + show me your gretsches
I tend to buy guitars and flip them really quick, so I made sure to wait a few weeks before deciding on this one.
Well I made my decision. Goddamn am I glad I have a gretsch again. There's just something about these guitars, every pro line I've tried has been a superb instrument. The kind of instruments that motivate me to really buckle down and practice guitar for hours straight. I got it for well under a grand in pristine condition, it's a 2014 model a 6117. No other guitar comes remotely close at the price I got it for. Annies go for less than 6120s, but they're in essence the same guitar with hilotrons.
That being said FUCK the space control bridge. It's so awful. I got an allparts bar bridge but for some reason they have a 15" radius (I've never even seen a guitar with this radius) and the seller I got it from had it listed as 12". Should have just bit the bullet the first time and got a tru arc or compton, so I ordered a tru arc last night. Might upgrade to TV jones later on too, the hilotrons are nice but if I only have 1 gretsch guitar I'd rather have filtertrons.

i love rockabilly and early rock and roll with a passion so i too am a proud gretsch player and owner albeit with an electromatic version. I have a pro jet as my HH guitar of choice. It's still a fine guitar and it fills a need in my collection.

I owned a 6128 DSV for a brief moment and absolutely loved it. By far one of the nicest quality (build, finish, etc) guitars I've ever had. It sounded fantastic plugged in, but it didn't really fit in my band mix. Unfortunately, I couldn't hold on to it for just looking pretty on the wall. Definitely a really cool guitar.

I turned down a deal with a White Falcon some years ago .... so this scratched the Gretsch/white Falcon itch for less money

Re: NG(retsch)D + show me your gretsches
I want one of these so bad. Two just popped up recently but I have no spare money/I'm in the middle of a jazzmaster build. But seriously, nitro finish and block inlays? On a Duo Jet? I couldn't possibly ask for more. I worry that these will be super hard to find in the future and the prices will go up, as it's hard enough now.InLimbo wrote:I owned a 6128 DSV for a brief moment and absolutely loved it. Sorry to hear it didn't work out for you in the band mix application. I've heard that before, that Duo Jets never really sit in the mix well in most people's bands. Sure, they sound amazing on their own, but get lost way too quickly. Could you not remedy that with an EQ pedal, or something else?

^^^
Not when I've got a Rickenbacker and a parts Jaguar that fit so much better. In hindsight, I think I could have dropped a Ric Hi-Gain in the bridge and made it work. But it's long gone.

Love the jets, I hear those new electromatic pickups are way better than the old ones. That harrison style double cut is one of my dream guitars.

I love Gretsches and have had a few, but just have one now. It's a '60 6119 and is tied with an old Jaguar as my favorite guitar ever.
With a '65 Clipper.
'64 Double Anniversary.
'68 Streamliner.

I don't play my Duo Jet nearly enough. Setzer was really on to something when he paired his Gretsch with a Bassman...
It's nice to be important, but it's important to be nice.

'67 Tennessean, '65 Nashville. The Tennessean is my #1 guitar, the Nashville sounds a bit underwhelming/generic at the moment but I'm hoping some Pyramid flatwounds will solve that issue.

Great choice, probably my favorite Gretsch tones ever are from David Schelzel's G6117 in all its modulated glory. More specifically, this one opening chord : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqOBhsmlH10" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: NG(retsch)D + show me your gretsches
And hope all goes well with your Tru-Arc switch-out. I've put stainless steel Comptons on my 2010 G6122-1962 and trashed-up 1992 G6128T, and they're both fantastic improvements in different but significant ways.
On the G6128T the original Gibson-looking Rattlematic went into the trash, and I'd swear that the meaty crunch of the Pre-FMIC ceramic Filltertrons had so much more upper end to them when the trade was complete.
The Brass bar bridge getting replaced by the Compton was just as noticeable, albeit moreso in that pick attack was no longer on the dull, stuffy side. Clean tones are now so much easier to wrestle out of the thing, and open voicings really shine.

Correction: David Schezel's Gretsch indeed is a 1964 vintage 2-tone green G6118 (Double Anniversary)...with hilotrons
