so this is kind of funny. i was looking at black strats and i came across this:


apparently fender custom shop released this as a john lennon guitar? for why? i know he played a sonic blue strat along with george in the mid 60s, but Fender is really reaching on this one calling it a john lennon model.

it's a tribute to a mysterious guitar that John played for only one or two concerts. It's an incredibly rare guitar to begin with and for some reason, nobody ever talks about it or knows why John had it for just a short period of time. Reaching, sure. Cash grab, of course. But it's a guitar that existed.

I now have a Strat again, I had a Bullet about 6-7 years ago that I sold to fund other purchases and always thought I'd buy one again and for whatever reason just now got around to getting another one--a Classic Vibe 50s Lake Placid blue Strat that I found used for $230. Sounds great, it's super light (right at 7 lbs.) and looks great. I was stupid to have waited this long to get another Strat because I really love how it sounds and it's super comfortable.

Two things that I'm going to have to replace, though, a scratchy pot with a wobbly knob (Tone 2) and a flimsy, crappy selector switch. I've never worked on a guitar, so I thought I'd source the parts and have a local tech install them. Any recommendations for these parts in terms of retailers and the parts themselves? I read a review for a Fender 5-way switch where the owner had a CV that required routing being done as it was too deep for the CV's body vs. a Fender Strat.

And if any one could recommend a good mint green pickguard that could replace the stock 1-ply white pickguard, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

He may have had a black strat at some point. I have no idea. Beatles are responsible for Rickenbacker being stuck in the past. That's another kettle of fish. Glass Onion is the BEST beatles song after Blue Jay Way.

I've probably posted this before, but god, I love my 1983 Fullerton '62RI. Bought it new, held onto it for 34 years. Here it is, seven years ago, with Scooter, who's 16 and a half years old now:

The headstock is definitely rad.

I've been guitar sitting the last couple months for my father. He has played music since he was a teenager; guitar, piano, bass...anything really. It comes natural to him. My grandmother had the same talent, but even more so.

As a youngster, some of my earliest memories include going to see dad's band perform. I'd get up on stage between their sets at the Lion's Club or wherever and I'd act a fool. Back then Dad always played a Stratocaster; one of the reissue '57 Strats from 1983. I guess I caught the music bug early and I've always appreciated the Strat.

Anyways, Dad retired a few years ago and gifted himself the following 1957 hardtail Stratocaster that I've had the pleasure of guitar sitting for the past few weeks:









The body date is 1-57. I'm not brave enough to fiddle with the neck. I'm returning the guitar soon, so I wanted to post a few pictures before the sad farewell.

Since then, it's been intonated properly, and has black knobs.

While Mr Clapton, Pearl Jam & SRV aren't top of my favourites list it was a lot of fun to watch. Looks like he was enjoying himself
