New USA Coronets

Epiphone have added to their made in the USA range with a 50s-style coronet:



It’s got a thinner body, P90, slim taper neck, and standard nut width, so not a proper reissue by any means.

I think it’s pretty cool. Would prefer it with a mini-hum, especially to differentiate from the Les Paul Jr.

They’re $1699 which is more than the LPJ, which is probably a mistake. Most people will probably see the Jr is cheaper and has a more prestigious name so won’t give this a second look.

I think they look really cool, and this is definitely my favourite look compared to the later 60s style one, which I have owned in the past.

I like that they sourced knobs that look like the old ones too....I wonder if a mini-humbucker would drop in, to make it look closer to the look of the 50s ones with the Epi NY style pickup.

I'd love to get one at some point...probably the Ebony one...I am not sure how much these will be in the UK...if they do the usual "swap the dollar sign for the pound sign" then that will make them SERIOUSLY expensive for a USA line single pickup guitar....we shall see.

The one complaint I had with my later version Coronet was that the guitar felt a touch small sometimes, as I am a tall guy...and the rounded edges would make it a touch slippery when sitting down...I think this more Telecaster-style slab will be better....I used to seriously rip on that guitar...it was alive with the wraptail.

Peach have them for £1,599. I’d be very surprised if you couldn’t swap in a mini hum on a mounting ring kind of like a les paul deluxe.

I made the mistake of looking at the at Peach...the Ebony one is just so awesome looking, and you are right, a LP Deluxe style bucker should go in easily...wondering about a Firebird pickup...I dunno...just daydreaming at the moment!



Having said all that, I just had yet another unexpected bill come up today that derails any gear buying for the foreseeable future.

It's like the universe trying to tell me something, I think!

They look so cool, but honestly I just hope I can buy the knobs and headstock badge to make my old epi SG look a tad cooler

But yeah, that pickup is just wrong. Mini humbucker with cream ring would have been much better, but it's an easy swap. I'd throw a Firebird pickup in there right away if I got one.
And it's a bit of shame they went with the slimmer body, that's one thing I would change with my Wilshires. I do like that they're light guitars, but it's bordering on too light, especially the 66 style asymmetrical one I have, which has quite a bit of neck dive even with the rather chunky trem installed. My other one (the early 60s symmetrical version) is better in that regard, but I definitely wouldn't mind a bit more weight and heft to it.

Now I’d be really hyped if they did a Crestwood Custom. I know we’re all about offsets, but something about a perfectly symmetrical guitar just gets me going.

The Epiphone IBG series cost about the same as this and got more or less nothing but hate.

And this, a simpler guitar in every way, gets a pass because it's made in the US?

I REALLY REALLY wish they had too. Even if it was $200 more I'd still go buy one tomorrow.

As others have said, IMO, a big miss that they didn't do something a LITTLE closer to the original pickup.
