Re: Fender Cyclone project
BTW The grain lined up with contours almost perfect! Like they were meant to be there.

It's a very nice piece of alder.
Have you decided how you wanna finish it yet?

Re: Fender Cyclone project
Torn. The grain is so nice I would hate to do a solid color over it. I might stain it and sand it back to darken the grain and then just shoot clear over it.

Re: Fender Cyclone project
That would be cool, especially with darkened grain. But also transparent white?

Re: Fender Cyclone project
Was thinking clear over the natural color since I use rattle cans. I don't think I could do transparent white?CROSS_guitars wrote:That would be cool, especially with darkened grain. But also transparent white?

Re: Fender Cyclone project
That grain is the nicest. I think you're right on with the natural finish.

Re: Fender Cyclone project
If you really want transparent white, thin milk paint could do it or a wood stain that you clear over.HNB wrote:Was thinking clear over the natural color since I use rattle cans. Re: Fender Cyclone project
The alder is quite dark. I dampened it with thinners to see how it looks and it's nice and dark for alder.

Re: Fender Cyclone project
I tried using milk paint a couple times and it just doesn't look white to me on alder. It looks more pink with white highlights? I think on ash it would work great since it is lighter in color?

Really clean work. One more vote for transparent finish of some kind. The wood is to nice to cover in opaque iMHO

Re: Fender Cyclone project
Such a beautiful piece of wood, and your great craftsmanship is doing justice to the piece of alder. Alder is one of those types of wood that dopes't absorb due and taking very evenly, which is why alder is usually finished with tinted/toned lacquers, when a transparent finish is desired. You have some small scrap pieces; I would run some tests and see where it goes. I am really looking forward to seeing the completed project.
