Surf Green Jazzmaster with what pickguard?
I have a Fender '60's Surf Green Jazzmaster. I love this guitar but am considering changing the pickguard. I've read some other threads and it seems that people recommend not getting a tortoise shell, mint, or parchment pickguard because they may not be vintage correct or something like that. I really like the way my guitar looks, but sometimes I feel like the white guard gives it somewhat of a cheaper look.
I'm not 100% worried about staying true to vintage but if there were some good vintage examples of a pale white guard I might be more convinced. Below are some good examples I found, but I want some other opinions and examples (not my pictures).
This is what mine looks like:
Mint:
Tortoise:
Opinions with examples? I'm trying to make sure that I'm not just changing it because I can leave things alone.

I really have liked the mint option on the guitars. It's just enough to scale it up a bit.

Mint looks really good on that. I bet parchment would as well.
Tort is the wrong choice.

+1 on the mint! I'm a big fan of mint. At least better than white. I LOVE tort, but there are a number of colors that I don't think tort goes well with, ANY sort of green being first on that list for me.
What about black? That could be classy:

Or anodized gold? Also classy

Re: Surf Green Jazzmaster with what pickguard?
Shadow's photo above might be of one of the J Mascis guards, some of them are pretty orangey gold. Here is a slightly less orange shade of anodised pickguard that I have on my surf green jazzmaster (also replacing a white guard):
The anodised guard has the x-factor of making the guitar run a little bit quieter.
I also like the look of mint but I say don't rule out tort (if good tort) on a surf green jazzmaster! NIsaacs, I love the tort that you posted above, is it a Fender Custom Shop jazzmaster (the tort looks a bit different on the Custom Shops, compared to the tort on the AV65s)?

I prefer the stock white guard over all of those options.
Also looks more 'vintage correct' than the incredibly fake looking Fender 'mint' guards.

Yeah white not whacky. Think about the sort of car that colour would have been on, it probably had a white roof and side flashes, a white or body colour and white accent interior, not rancid bolognese roof and side flashes or garish gift shop gold roof and side flashes.andy_tchp wrote:I prefer the stock white guard over all of those options.

That was my thinking when i was looking to replace the guard on my AV65... The sonic blue suits the white guard and the era that it represents...shadowplay wrote:Yeah white not whacky. been there http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... =6&t=84220
yeah that "orange" pickguard is from a early Squier Mascis - I think they changed the color to a more golden tone now
At the moment I have a white guard on it:
Sometimes change it to tort if I feel like it:
and tbh I don't like mint on that guitar - makes it look a bit boring...
but it could be that it's the yellow tint of my surf green guitar - the 60s Lacque Series looks a bit mor greenish like Seafoam and I thought mint looks better on those

Re: Surf Green Jazzmaster with what pickguard?
mint or parchment look plenty vintage. or soak your white one in tea or coffee.
Personally, i think the green of a mint guard blends nicely into the Surf.
But to each his own.
i guess you didn't see my thread from last week:

Re: Surf Green Jazzmaster with what pickguard?
I saw your build threads and love the way your Jazzmaster looks! Actually, when you finished it up with the build and settled with the tortoise guard, that's what I wanted to do. I'm not hell bent on being vintage correct, but I do believe the Surf Green stands out from the other Jazzmasters and should look the part.NICQ wrote:been there http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... =6&t=84220

The mention of the 60's cars and their styling makes a whole lot of sense to me. I guess if I went with a Mint guard it would be that with more of an aged look. Hmmm...

I did not see your thread, but I like the way yours turned out. I noticed you said the holes didn't quite line up like the old guard. Did you have to modify the new one to fit or was it just a tight squeeze?

of the 13 holes on the guard, 10 fit very nicely. three were a little off but the screws still went in fine and relatively straight with no modification.

Another vote for the mint, and I also think a back painted guard would look excellent as well. Tort doesn't seem all that complimentary to this one.
