sean's build log (revived)
for a while, i've been planning a jaguar build but because oh life, how you get in the way. however, a jaguar neck came up for sale lately and after some negotiating with the seller (a guy called sean who was super cool) and getting lost in edinburgh, we got the neck home.
i have no idea what the neck was from. it had a number on the neck heel but not sure from where it could be from. it has a sanding mark where the normal fender/squier details on the back of the headstock are. anyway, the paint on the headstock was really well done and the colour is really nice...... shame i'm stripping it. however i am planning a blue guitar down the line so swings and roundabouts.
so. what is the plan? well a while ago, i seen one of the few live pictures i could find of christian hejnel- addams from scarling and thought he had one of the coolest looking jaguars ever but something about it was not quite sitting right.
after playing around on dressing room, i figured it out. while the mint guard looks great, i'm not a mint guy. the white/mint covers also look good but i felt like black would be better. i want to put my own style pickups in it. i'm not super into the rhythm mode on a jag but i want to put something there. so what is the plan, i hear the voices in my head ask....... well
black over white (like the old custom colour fenders)
matching black headstock
yellowed white pearloid guard.
upper control plate controlling 2 piezo pickups (one near the bridge, one under the pickguard)
sentell snowblind in the neck
sentell jaguar rail in the bridge
chrome hardwear
maple body (as always, as heavy as i can get)
so yeah, it's gonna be a slow build but keep an eye on it.

I just noticed it's a 21 fret neck. Now I wish we knew what it came from.

Re: sean's jaguar build (slow build)
thanks for the encouragement. i'm just going to be collecting it part by part slowly so i dont do the thing i always do with projects. get all the parts, throw em together and then realise i have a lot of tweaking to do.

Re: sean's jaguar build (slow build)
Yep it's not a jaguar neck. Does it measure as a 24 inch scale? If so, i reckon it might be a conversion neck (like found on some jagmasters) which won't bolt on to a Jaguar body and intonate correctly.mackerelmint wrote:I just noticed it's a 21 fret neck. Now I wish we knew what it came from.

Re: sean's jaguar build (slow build)
ok. the plot thickens. i decided to compare the neck to my friend's squier jaguar. same lenth and the frets are nearly the same (the frets getting a bit closer the higher up you go) so i stripped away some of the blue on the headstock. no sign of any decal ever there.

Re: sean's jaguar build (slow build) with added jazzmaster m
ok. updates. i have been collecting parts very slowly while working on another guitar.
since the last post i have a bridge (with no saddles), a lower control plate (which i'm going to fabricate a new one) and the pearly guard.
as for the neck. it's cleaned up nicely. it is a jagmaster neck. under the blue paint was the tanlines. after mesuring it up as to where the bridge is and mesuring from the 12th fret, we're looking at 24" scale and its only like 2-3mm off 12" from 12th to bridge. im not focusing on perfect intonation since i use really heavy strings and i'm used to being a little out.
some of the plan has changed a little. i still want this to be the most versatile jag i could ever own and was looking into ways i could give it as many switching options as i could. i discovered this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvNur3-2v2U" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) and realised this is what i need on mine. the free way switch.
im still sticking with the piezo under the guard btw but i figured put one of the piazo bars behind the bridge to boost the noise if needed.
the pickup idea keeps changing but i figured with the free way, a humbucker in the neck will be too much. so i'm thinking just get some normal style jag pickups from jerry sentell.
as for the body. part of me is tempted to get a guitarbuild body and the other half is wanting a semi hollow saylor body. the saylor will be harder to get in the uk but it's so cool. but guitarbuild has the bodies in the weight i feel comfortable with and easier to get ahold of.
the plan for paint is still the same. pearl white basecoat under and gloss black over so when the guitar wears, it will look pretty sexy.
