Is that a finished Jag on page 9?

Post by theworkoffire » Sun Apr 10, 2016 5:57 am

I've been telling myself for years that I probably have enough Jag parts in my spares drawers left over from trades and whatnot to actually make one.

Well, today I thought I'd have a look and see, and lo and behold, turns out I pretty much do!

I'm just in the process of buying a nice old '66 shortscale neck off Will, so other than that, I think all I might need is a string tree, a trem arm and matching pickup covers of some sort - I have lots of cream JM covers and lots of white Jag ones, but nothing that remotely matches...

Image

That's a nice chunk of swamp ash I've had knocking around for ages, which I'll need to extend at the bottom, late '60s Fender factory style. Bridge pickup is a Vintage Vibe one that never went into a Motorik, and the neck pup is a Novak that someone threw in with a trade years ago. By some miracle they happen to be RWRP

The guard probably won't stay - the headstock needs to be matching, and I'm going to try to mix a custom colour from what leftovers I have in the shed, so it's anyone's guess how this will turn out...

Sweet! Partsmaster in the coolest sense of the phrase. I love it! What color are you thinking for the body and head?

Looks like fun? Any ideas in the custom color or are you staying mysterious for now?

Well, I just had a rummage around and it looks like all I have in any quantity is Dakota Red and a vintage Porsche Leaf Green I based the Motorik II mix on...

Image

I have a massive pot of pearl flakes, some larger metallic flakes, and maybe some black and white, so I might try to tone the green down for a muted light metallic green similar to the Motorik II (the one in my avatar). Very open to suggestions on this. I just looked through 35 pages of the Gallery and drew a blank... I used to want something like BMM or a very orangey yellowed CAR, so that's also a possibility with a bit of tweaking.

That pink underside of the can with metallic flake would look so good on that jag.

I like the idea of a lighter, muted green metallic. So classy. Would be cool if you were able to age that guard to have a yellowish vintage mother of toilet seat look to match!

Given those colour options I'd go with Candy Apple Red, or your own version of it. Basically a deep, almost blood red with a very fine metallic hue to it.
I initially though you might be able to pull off a kind of metallic tan/brown (like the mega-yellowed CAR on the OSG/Lee Ranaldo Mustang) but I'm not so are you can now.

Hmmm.

:fp:

I'll worry about the colour when the time comes. In the meantime, I chopped some ledges into the extra chunk and cleaned up the joining faces and glued up:
