No mights about it, it's better than anything anyone's making at the moment. That thing is HOT. I'd smash up all my guitars to splinters and flush them down a toilet if that's what I had to do to get a rickenjagger 4000.

Thanks guys! I'll be cutting one of these next week. I'm just trying to find out if a standard ricky toaster guitar pickup will fit in the 4001/4003 chrome mounts for the bridge position... Watch this space!

This is what I'm going for:

Then there's a company that makes these things to fill in the gap from taking off the cover on a regular ricky bass ..

Ok .There's good news and bad news.

Good news is the pickup will be a perfect fit!

Bad news is the rings cost $180

I find it almost impossible to believe nobody's making knock offs of these for $40... I guess I will keep looking!

Edit: tentative optimism time... #02038 lists a mounting ring for $36 but no 'add to cart'... Hope somebody out there is still making these...

Sorry to necro this thread, but the original body design just wasn't quite right. I've now got the gears turning though and now I'm gonna have to think about what I can feasibly do...

Image

I feel like this would be really cool with a bolt on 24" egc neck and a mastery style vibrato instead of the custom one.

Going thinline might be a step too far. What do y'all think

Cheers,

Rosie

That'd be rad, big fan of EGC stuff myself. Although if you're going Thinline it'll neck dive like crazy so I'd go solid body with a fairly dense wood like Mahogany etc.

Deed _Poll, did you actually ever build one of these?
They look absolutely beautiful! I read through the whole thread after it was cross-linked in the Jazzmaster with both contours thread - and besides these pictures I've never seen any actual wood getting drilled or whatever... just damn curious! :-)

Hey MTFBWY, no I actually didn't make one yet! It was at the front of my mind at Musikmesse a few years back, I was twisting the asian pickup and hardware manufacturers left right and centre to try and get hold of the chrome pickup mounts to make it work.

I was never fully satisfied with the design from the OP, not that it's bad, but as Rosie has demonstrated above with her adjustments there was always something not quite right about the Jag style bass horn, especially on the one with the Rickenbacker 4000 style pickguard. Just too much negative space up there and the non-radiused edges make it look even more bulbous and rounded, which doesn't really fit with the very svelte lines of the lower body.

It looks good the way Rosie has it with the Rickenbacker style horn, which is great for that guitar (and I'd do it that way on request) but for me, I'm always judging these sorts of designs as a successful hybrid between several styles and it just tipped it too far into Rick territory for me.

Though I have since incorporated more Rickenbacker style design language into other guitars like the tailpiece ramp

if I were to do a Rickenbacker style design from here I'd probably go with the Rickenblaster design a few posts above :)
