In order to get the answer, you have to start a couple more threads named "lollar regals".

You've got the Mods and projects and also the Vintage Section covered. I suggest you try the For sale section next.

Gee, my bad...you don't have access yet, do ya? ;)

The sound difference between the pickups you mentioned is about 13 and a half.

I've heard a few guys compare Regals to WRHB's a few times, but I've never personally messed with them. Honestly, I think ANY pickups sound good with fuzz (except super high gainy metal pickups) ;D ;D

I have both a Jazzmaster and a Fender reissue Thinline with Regals installed. I don't use a fuzz however, but at least I can give you some description of the tonal difference of the pickups. They are more similar than you'd think, especially in the highs due to the fact that they both have magnetic pole pieces. Like someone else said, it is constructed almost the same as a 70s WRHB, with AlNiCo V like screw shaped magnets, and alnico 2 cylinder magnets underneath the cover. Supposedly, '"slightly rounder" sounding than a real WRHB from the past.

The Jazzmaster pickup sounds sweeter and smoother, where the Regals have a more prominent midrange presence. Not sure where in the mids exactly, but a certain frequency range is pushed a bit. I'm using 1meg pots on both guitars with 500k tone pots on the Thinline/Regals so they are a little bright. The Regals are also a bit higher output too. I would suspect that the Jazzmaster would sound more controlled with a fuzz than the Regals. The Regals will probably be a tad muddy with fuzz, especially in the neck and middle positions. I'm usually trying to find ways to clean up and "unfizz" them as they are pretty hairy sounding on their own and I'm usually looking for a purer sound with less "fuzziness".

I'll see if I can borrow my friend's fuzz soon and report back on the differences. Maybe I can record it with my iPhone or something?

I honestly don't think that WRHBs and JM Pickups are very similar. While WRHBs such as the Regals retain more top end than most regular humbuckers, they are still humbuckers. They are somehat fatter sounding, while JM pickups are and will always be single coils that are much more piercing sounding.

I have a Tele Deluxe with Lollar Regals and an AV65 JM that are totally different beasts

While I agree to a certain extent especially regarding the midrange as I said before, I've found that my AVRI 62 Jazzmaster is NEVER piercing. Maybe my volume and tone pots have drifted to where they are no longer 1 meg, but the highs on my AVRI Jazzmaster pickups are not nearly as bright as my Regals with 1 meg volume pots/500k tone pots (the combination of which should be less than two 1 megs if my math is correct). My Tele is a Classic Player Thinline Deluxe which is basically a 72 Thinline with 4 controls and a Les Paul style selector switch like the Deluxe.

I have noticed that playing an AVRI 65 Jaguar recently, it was definitely piercing, where my friend's AVRI 62 Jag is not. I would try 500k pots in it if you feel the stock jazzmaster pickups are too bright/piercing.
