stupid refinishing question

can a sunburst body be stripped and refinished in another transluscent or semi-transluscent hue, like, say, a blonde?

or is the yellow-ish part of a sunburst a stain of some sort that penetrates the wood as opposed to sitting on top of it, and thus would not strip off like plain old paint?

please excuse my ignorance, i really don't know.

Yeah it can be cone you just need to be a little more diligent at getting the yellow out.  Check out the Blonde restoration I did once... this is one of the toughest getting all that red out of the grain.

Depends on the year - some were done with the yellow as a stain in the wood, some were done with the yellow sprayed on.  Not sure which was done when.  I'd ask over at the reranch forum.

The dipped vrs sprayed is not the big deal and you likely would not be able to tell the difference.  The larger difference that is obvious is when Fender switched from a totally translucent yellow dye to a semi opaque yellow stain.  This came in the era of the "Target Bursts" where they yellow red and black are much more drastic in contrast.  Fender switched to this semi opaque yellow b/c their wood joint on their bodies were not near as precise as they use to be, and this hid that.
