Straight up amazing work that's bound to result in one of those awesome, larger-than-Fender guitars this forum keeps producing :w00t:

Okay, Coming along. I sprayed 3 coats of white lqcquer primer, sanded. Then 3 coats ReRanch BMM. Now I'm on to clear, got 4 coats done tonight:

Gonna need a lot more to get a nice gloss over the metallic paint. Been painting in an old 'treehouse' I rigged as a paint booth. Its lined with plastic sheeting, and I have a big box fan that can blow down the trapdoor for downdraft. Usually don't need the fan. I have a heater in there right now because it's only ~10 degrees C here now.

Looking good! How did you manage to spray the wings only? Did you just tape off the middle?

Yeah, I taped off a middle. Did a few coats of clear first to give the tape better adhesion.

Great job! I love the colour, it looks like a real vintage burgundy mist unlike a number of Fender's reissues.

Haven't updated in a while. Got a lot more clear coat on, finished that almost a month ago. Got decal paper, but now my printers broken; When I get a new one I will put it on and finish it off with a few more coats of clear on the headstock, and on the front of the guitar (doesn't seem to have built up as well as the sides and back). The decal will have gold added to the S with a gold paint pen.

Then it'll just wetsanding/polishing and a wait until I can afford to get parts printed and gold plated. I also just finished off a lapsteel and I'm making a few pickups and control plates for a forum member to keep busy.

It kinda got benched for a while, and now I'm going to school away from home. I'll try to get to it if I'm home for a while this summer.

Hey thanks for your post and great notes on this build , its so hard to find info about this guitar . Those pickups seem awesome yet so few have actually build them . I am trying to build my own for my XII , so how many turns did you end up winding? Is 12500 actually correct ? Im not looking for vintage specs correct but i need to have an idea of the amount of turns I do want them to sound good.
Thanks

When I wound them I didn't have any way of counting (was using the handwheel on a sewing machine as a winder then). I do have the dcr values recorded somewhere.. Best bet would be to try and find values taken from vintage examples that were for sale on ebay/reverb. You can test while winding by very carefully sanding back the insulation on the wire; actually is much more accurate than going by winding numbers if your going to be guiding/tensioning the wire by hand.

and wow, I really need to get this thing back on my bench and finished. Have to make another bridge as this one was used on another project.
