Painting Body Cavities, Just a Thought

Post by vancouverois » Wed Nov 14, 2007 3:18 pm

In the case of a guitar project, applying the finish on a new body.

I was just wondering if it would not be better to not paint the body cavities.
I mean the use of nitro finish is mainly due to the fact that the wood can "breath" under the nitro finish and thus improve the tone.
Well, so may be if the cavities are not painted,  would it help the wood to "breath"?
Can the same apply to the neck pocket as well?

Just a thought.

I don't know if it would make a difference but it will surely save some paint so why not try it !  ;)

For infos, stock guitars have they cavities usually painted with conductive paint but neck pocket are bare wood.

My thought is that one of the main reasons to protect the wood is from moisture, which has a harder time getting in on the neck pocket since it is screwed tight to the neck. It may not matter in the pup cavity. I doubt it would warp or split. But the anti-conductive foil over bare wood may work for you.
What's he building in there?

Bare wood neck pocket, my Squier Tele Custom II doesn't, it's painted.
Not sure about my Strats, never had to take the necks off.
