Wearing out a nitro neck.
I'm not a fan of how glossy and "new" my AVRI neck is at the moment so I was wondering if there was way to just soften it up a bit without actually going as far as say sanding it down with sandpaper and whatnot. I've been taking a dish cloth/wash cloth and rubbing the neck up and down over and over as hard and fast as possible(minds out of the gutter, people) while watching tv all in hopes of wearing out the finish a bit. Not sure if it's going to work or anything like that.
Anyways, does anybody have any helpful tips?

playing aggressively with dirty hands, really digging in, will work better than a dish towel i think. Use some very fine steel wool, #00000. Use the steel wool until the neck has a matte look and then play aggressively where you're rubbing your thumb & palm with as friction as you can stand. You know when you rub your palms together hard and fast o the point that they get hot and make sort of a burning smell? Same concept here. Sounds retarded but I did that for my blue strat (not the fretboard wear though, that was tooled). If you use #00000 steel wool, you can easily polish it back with a good polish cloth.

That's actually what happens with the cloth. It's a really ratty looking and feeling cloth. I think if I do that over a long period of time, it should help it out a bit, anyhow. I just don't want to go all Nash on the thing just yet.OffYourFace wrote: You know when you rub your palms together hard and fast o the point that they get hot and make sort of a burning smell?
I'll think of other materials I can work with as well.

Try a pair of jeans instead of the wash cloth.

Interesting. I just might. Howabout actual wool? Like an old wool sweater or something.

I know the steel wool trick is an old guitar tech standby. Just use something really fine and use it up and down the neck between the fretting hand and the neck. It ought to be pretty comfortable in a very short period of time that way.

Alright, I took my pants off and I've been rubbing it for the past 15 minutes.
When I'm done, I'll start on the guitar.

Not sure you need to lubricate the denim...

Re: Wearing out a nitro neck. A.K.A SEXY THREAD!
The guitar said it had to get up early in the morning and it left. We talked about an hour ago and we decided that we should see other people. I guess man just wasn't meant to give a guitar a rub down.
In other news, the jeans didn't really do anything. I tried a few different pairs of pants but the dish cloth seems to make the neck a lot hotter feeling. I even tried rubbing the neck until it got hot with the towel and then switching to the jeans to see if it works a bit better. It didn't.
It's fine. I'll just steel wool it sometime in the near future. No rush. You can't rush these things. They take time. Relicing for the first time can be a beautiful thing.

+1 on 0000 steel wool
put the guitar body in a bag and tape it up
or you will get steel dust all over your pickups!
its a really gentle five minute mod, mine is actually coming back to gloss
after a couple of months so i will go over it again
