Phat Cats?

Post by MTLasater » Sun Aug 19, 2007 6:05 pm

Anyone here replaced a humbucker with a Seymour Duncan Phat Cat (P-90 in a humbucker-sized fitting)?  The bridge pickup in one of my Toronados (my other Toronado's bridge pickup was already replaced with a JB humbucker) is the original Fender Atomic humbucker, which sounds quite dull and muddy.  I've heard the samples on the SD website, but I want to know if anyone here has a Phat Cat in their own guitar before I buy one myself.
I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin.  But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to.

I used to have a Phat Cat in the neck position on my Greco LP copy.  Great pickup, but I have the impression that it would be a bit too trebly and raucous for a bridge pickup.  But, then if that's your thing...

One of the guitar players from Explosions in the Sky plays a Toronado, and that thing just sounds like a dream!  I would try to find out what kind of pickups he has in his, and go with those.  They actually look stock though.

  Here I am !!  8)
Next time remember to light the K sign in the sky, I'll come sooner  (I invented this kind of sign.. Bruce Wayne is just a copycat... Bloody rich bat !  >:(..)
;D

So yes, I put phat cats in every guitar I own that have humbuckers size pups... so I guess I can say I love this pickup !
It sounds like a P90 with a little more sparkle.
I really appreciate the fact that it responds very well to pick attack & guitar volume variation.
On the same pickup, you can get a round & warm tone by playing near the neck and have a more aggressive tone if you play with your pick closer to the bridge.
With the guitar volume on 9 I have a flatter EQ tone than on 10. Going from 9 to 10 gives a slight mid boost. It's a great thing to  play rhythm/solo parts.

Even tho, you put a PC in the neck and bridge, you'll have 2 very different & complementary sound. The middle position is beautiful : sizzled and fat at the same time.

They are equally usuable on clean & Od settings.. even the bridge pup sounds good clean.

Note that I use them with .22 caps (I get more highs & dynamics).

mmm.. I don't know what to add (they look good !).. feel free to ask if you want to know something more.  ;)

I knew you'd come 'round... 8)

I actually have thought of a Phat Cat for a neck pickup in a Tele...

I think it's a great idea !
It will match the tele bridge pup better than a classic humbucker but it will still sound fat.
You'll have a broad choice of tones with this combination actually.  8)
