Seymour Duncan Antiquities for Jazzmaster, I vs. II
I'm aiming to get away from the shrillness of the CIJ stock pickups without getting too dark.
Have heard that the Antiquity I's are very dark... Would the II's be too close to the CIJ's?
Does anyone know?

There are many factors.... If you love the guitar, definitely change the pickups. As for the 'shrill', what type of amp are you using? JM's in general are brighter than most guitars. To make my JM more 'even' with my other guitars (tele/lespaul), I change the lead ckt. vol. & tone pots. They come stock with 1 meg. pots so I change them to 500k, that gets rid the 'shrill' enough for me. Try doing just that to start with and go from there. I currently use Duncan Ant. II's. They seem nice & clear to me, no harsh or pronounced mids with a nice even bass & treble tone.... that is, with 500k pots in place. As for the Duncan Ant.I's, I've never heard them but they based on the earlier black bobbin pickups from '58-'63. I have a real set of black '58/'59 pickups and they have much more in the mid frequencies.

I been using 1's for years. they aqre kinda dark but now everything else just sounds bright to me. I put a cap across the vol pot to cut highs and get a more conventional single coil sound.

What value cap? Are you using 1K or 500 pots?

I really don't like the ant II on bridge position (treblefull) but the neck is one of the best pups I've ever tried : well balanced and surprising, imo he's the best for distorsion.
I've bought Ant I last week, they are closer to a P90 with little bit more dynamics, I use its to play Jazz and blues, it's marvelous! so silky with my bogner shiva

1k pots like stock, I can't remember the exact value of the cap. I believe I used half the value of a jaguar strangle switch.

I put a set of lollars in my Sherwood. I had the bridge slightly overwound. They're great! They give absolute clarity and you can hear each string clearly. They're ballsy without being overly so. Even on the rhythm setting I get much better sonic response, more clarity.
