Repair green nitrate guard? Can it be glued?

Post by Marc » Sun Jul 01, 2007 2:55 am

I've got a green nitrate guard that was routed for a humbucker - i have a large enough piece of nitrate from another ruined green guard to 'fill' the whole and then in theory reroute for a single coil (it's a actually the neck position in a Telecaster in this instance).

In theory this is possible but I was wondering what the best way and what type of glue to use?

Better still does anyone know someone who could do a pro job on the repair?

Thanks

In the march issue of guitar player they repair a tort guard with "Weld On W-16—a solvent-based plastic glue that melts surfaces together." Here is a link to the article on the net. You need to click on each figure to get the full explanation. I would think the process would be the same for both materials.

acetone (finger nail polish remover) will work too. Just brush it on both of the broken edges and clamp.

I hope I never have to do this, but the idea that I could fix it sounds awesome.

I'm not sure you will get a very close fit, one that would disguise the fill anyway, so I would be wary of glues that have no 'body' to them, like very thin glues or acetone. Ideally you need something that will fill any slivers of a gap and remain a strong and viable filler as well as a glue. In the UK I use an Evo Stick product for such repairs called 'Tensol', which is clear but has a viscosity that will fill gaps. The big deal with any good plastic glue, and it is much like acetone based paints, they go off very quickly, and you can either ruin a job or be held aloft as  a hero within seconds.

I've repaired nitrocellulose binding by melting a piece in a small container of acetone and applying it to the seam and missing part.

I think the deal with acetone is that it actually melts the nitrate and bonds it together.  You may need to do a two-step process - nitrate to bond it, then use some kind of glue with body and maybe tinted, to fill the inevitable tiny gaps where the two pices did not meet together exactly.
