Swedish stripper
hi all,
well here is one for you Jags lovers. It came in the workshop for a refin but when I took it apart, I noticed some traces of the original finish in the control cavities and the sunburst was clearly visible in the dings on the body. We decided to try and recover the original finish. it's a 64 clay dots with an april 64 stamping in the trem cavity. We believe that it was refinished in Sweden in the 60's by Hagstrom who was importing Fender for scandinavia back then and did that a lot like Jennings, Vox in England or Paul Beuscher in France etc.
I had no doubt that it wasn't a factory refin or a Fender "over sunburst" sparkle so it was ok to remove that old refin.
It was refinished over sunburst in a VERY thick early polyester kind of Orange Sparkle metalic. You can also see that the whole sunburst was oversprayed with a black primer. Sadly the body was sanded down quite a prior to refinishing and some of the original sunburst was completely gone in some areas.
Anyways, after quite a few hours of carefully peeling that thickskin sparkle poly off, a little water sanding and buffing the jag looks like a beaten up sunburst again !!! Removing that really thick poly finish also did improve the general tone and sound of the Jag quite a bit .

Re: Swedish stripper
well ... Sorry Fuller
the jag is finished and rdy to rock, it lost almost 600 gr !!! It really is fun to have to heat up a Poly thickskin without burning the nitro hehe
All and all it was really worth it and challenging, too bad it was so damaged to start with when they did the refin but with a few aging tricks it looks like a really worn sunburst.
I d post some pix of it soon with a few of it's cousins and sisters.

aw man, thats beautiful!
I actually really like the way the different layers of paint/wood show through, its like a sunset or the surface of jupiter. Hows it sound?

Architecture students are like virgins with an itch they cannot scratch, never build a building 'till are fifty, what kind of life is that?
