A little bit more progress- in full pedantic mode, but this project has already dragged on a long time, so whatever... I looked at ready-made jack plates, electrosockets and such, hoping for a time-saver, but nothing was right, so I've epoxied this aluminium angle into the body, which will hold the jack. All the gappiness/ugliness will be concealed by the plastic that will wrap the sides, and there will be an escutcheon made to hopefully look cool, which will be held in place by the output jack nut (no screws):

3mm aluminium plate has been glued to the back of the pickguard, and drilled/threaded for the pots. This keeps everything clean and low-profile- just the splines protrude from the pickguard, and no need for the panel nuts, so less of a footprint to cover when I get around to coming up with a design for the knobs :

Out of curiosity, what vinyl wrap did you get? I ended up stripping mine completely (the wrap didn't even survive the removing of the neck), but once again I think the stuff I used was non-permanent wrap with a crap adhesive. I know Cross made a cool one with wrap (he mentioned it briefly in his video interview) and his looked really good. The thing I'm sure of is that you want to put some clear on top of your vinyl, otherwise it'll be too fragile to withstand regular guitar abuse. For all its faults, the wrap I used did a good job at masking the sanding scratches that were left by the sealing process.

This is the stuff. Blatantly fake! For car interiors, supposedly. I was on the fence a bit about it- was also considering some thin leather or similar- but the neck's done in black nitro, and when I buffed it out, this stuff looked great with it (to me, at least). I've played around with it a bit- tried your suggestion of clear coat over it, and nitro wouldn't adhere to it. I'll probably just use it as is and hope for the best.

That looks fantastic insomnicide!!! Not talking about sound, but just purely aesthetics, I bet it would rock so much harder with a single pickup. But you might want more for sound options.

It's been a while since I've posted on here myself, but I'm working on getting some pictures on a few things I've been working on, most notably a shelf for behind my couch (with electrical outlets on the side/lower shelf for phone charging!) and a welded sunflower for my girlfriend for Xmas (extra-wide nuts for the body, threaded rod for the stem, and strips of actual copper for the petals). I'll get some pictures in the next couple weeks when things calm down a little bit.

Making steady progress on the body. Stained/ sealed the neck, and routed out the pickup cavity. Only major body work I need to do now is making a control cavity. I'm torn between making a large cavity to reduce weight, or making a smaller one so I don't need to make a big cover for the back of the body.

I'm really happy with the neck. I like the simple headstock shape, and the round over on the back of the headstock ties it in nicely with the body.


Time to order the hardware. Thinking of getting a fender toronado style bridge, because I can't think of many styles of guitar bridge that resemble the style of a 4001 bridge. Going with something simple that suggests the same shape.


I'm not sure when I'm going to have time to work on this again after today, as my January is going to be hectic. I'll try to keep y'all updated.

My first go with the vinyl wrap. I'm still just a bit on the fence with the look, but I'll carry on with it and see how everything pans out. There will be matt white side binding, and I've done two backs out of 3mm acrylic- one gloss black, one matt white (close in look to the binding), I'll see which looks best. The side binding will enclose the back. Thinking now maybe the pickguard shouldn't be glossy...
(Those brass saddles won't be staying btw)

I like the alligator skin pattern on it. That gives a little more depth to the black.

I love the inlays!!! And how does that bridge work? It is a vibrato of sorts, no?
