That looks really good. I like the black. Even if it is slightly off-black, it'll look outstanding. Nice choice.

:) . . . OK it just left the work bench . . .

My boy wanted a sword . . . OK it's more a gladius . . . turns out that guitar making is a transferrable skill . . . .

After the three applications of black dye, I applied Old Masters Spanish Oak stain. This is a deep black stain and gets into all the pores that the dye doesn't work on. It's really starting to look special now.

That black is nice and rich. I've often entertained making a body like that with a deep gloss finish and still allowing the grain to show. Looks great already.

Beautiful, Toots. The pickguard and fretboard are almost a perfect match.

That's awesome! Gladius is my favorite sword size. I'm 5'5" and love short swords. Back in December, I ordered a short (24") lightsaber blade with my short-handled lightsaber hilt from Ultrasabers.

It's now back on the guitar . . . and I still have to make 2 modifications but I'm DONE with it for now (took 2 solid days of work from bare to finished BTW). The good news is that the coil selection on the pRails works flawlessly now (yes the problem was a wiring fault in the neck switches which caused a intermittent ground fault ... and a scratchy pickup). The bad news is that I'll have to go in at least one more time to fix the tone part of the circuit . . . there is seemingly a (intermittent . . . again) bad switch and I have to figure out why it isn't behaving apart from that . . . OH . . . and I 'lost' the trim pot (I'll likely find it when cleaning up my workbench :fp: ) for the treble bleed so that has to be 'fixed' as well . . . .

Here is the body with the first few coats of tru oil:

Image

Unfortunately, as I continued to apply tru oil and the grain began to fill in, it started to disappear.
If, after the first few coats, I had applied a grain filler, I would have been good.
Or if I had used a stronger top coat that wouldn't need as many layers, that would have been good too.

But, I hadn't done those things and I couldn't live with the grain disappearing. So I sanded the entire thing back.

Image

At that point the grain was pretty well filled with black, so I knew I needed to change direction.

I have a pile of artist oil paint leftover from a college oil painting class, so I decided to use some as a wipe on color coat. I used a combination of Pthalo Green and Burnt Umber to get a dark green color inspired by the Thurston Moore signature Jazzmaster. I'll let this cure for a few days, then proceed with the tru oil again.

Image

I'll try the all black thing again another time. Using my new knowledge, that one will turn out fantastic.
