Nitro over polyurethane
Hi all,
Beel lurking around for a while but here's my first post...
And the first post is a question. Sorry for that. Introduced myself in the proper section but to sum-up, I'm 33, living in "cheese friendly" France. Been a Les Paul guy for a long time and just moved into the off-set world.. love it !
Here's my question.
I've recently acquired a MIJ Jaguar (sunburst). I understood the finish is polyurethane. I'd like to acheive a nitro "something" over sunburst finish.
What shall I do? Strip the whole finish and start from the beginning ?
Try to thin the polyurethane laquer, keep the sunburst, sand smooth and respray the solid color on top ?
Basically the question is : what combination works on polyurethane in terms of Primer/ color/ laquer?
I diidn't found the answer searching forums...or I maybe missed something as my english ain't that good...
Thanks for your help
Cheers
G.P

Re: Nitro over polyurethane
Nitro over polyurethane works ok. I have OTM over poly sunburst on my CIJ Jag. Cheap acrylics will probably not work and chip/flake very easy. I've seen this a few times.
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

Re: Nitro over polyurethane
Hey olderbrother, thanks for the reply :-)
What is OTM ?
The reason I'm asking is that I want to relic/ weathercheck the outer finish layer.
Do youthink that'll work?
Thanks
regards

Re: Nitro over polyurethane
OTM= Ocean Turquose Metallic
Here it is:
Build thread here: http://www.offsetguitars.com/forums/vie ... =8&t=14228
Yes I think it'll work with weatherchecking - I'm not 100% sure how the poly will react though - if that layer checks or not with freeze/heat stressing.

...so you mean he should repaint it with first sunburst then an opaque colour instead of leaving the poly sunburst?gpselmer wrote:I'd like to acheive a nitro "something" over sunburst finish.
He's after something like this, I guess:

Re: Nitro over polyurethane
Eventualy found a few hours to run through the process of removing the brightness of the original laquer with a scratch pad... will move to the Nitro paint quite soon. Will keep you guys posted...
