The "volume' knob is actually a three-way rotary switch for pickup switching. The volume control is where the tone control would normally be - and there's no tone knob...telenary wrote:Seriously hawt. How do you switch the pickups? I don't see any sort of switching mechanism.

You're my hero. This control layout is streamlined and functional; I love it.elektrovac wrote:The "volume' knob is actually a three-way rotary switch for pickup switching. I've been wanting to build an all-mahogany mustang FOREVER (ask paul, I had hit him up about mahogany necks a few times in the past). And I'm a much bigger fan of DuoSonic IIs than of Mustangs.
Top to bottom, start to finish, this is probably my favorite guitar on OSG.

Wow, thanks for the detailed tone report! Thats really interesting to hear actually, I've always wanted to get the sound of my NR p90'd firebird in a handy, bolt-on tele style package, and was wondering if a mahogany body and neck would help me to get there, with the right pickups of course. I love it when you set out on a project and it comes together beautifully and to plan, seriously if fender were to do a limited run of mahongany duo-sonics in custom colours with hot pickups, well the world would never be the same again...elektrovac wrote:Well, it's not really road tested yet. Only played it for an hour or two. But it sounds great. Obviously it does not sound like your typical Fender. It's more dense and solid sounding and not so airy and sparkly. Which is just what I wanted. It loves my Keeley RAT pedal and just sounds great when played into a cranked tube amp.mijmog wrote:Wow, those colours! Such a well considered project, its perfect.
Really intrigued to hear how it sounds with the pickup choice and wood combination.
My initial idea was for it to replace my Tokai P90's Gold Top (I just can't get into playing Gibson style guitars) and get a Fender with the sound of a P90's punk rock guitar. Like Johnny Thunders. Or even AC/DC. And I am definately very satisfied in that field. The concept works in real life too.
The pickups are Lindy Fralin Steel Poled 43 for bridge which is almost identical to a P90 in contruction and specifications, measuring a mighty 10 K ohms. The neck pickup is the more moderate Steel Poled 42 which in construction and sound is a more like a mix between a strat and a P90 pickup. Still with a bar magnet and adjustable pole pieces, but not as beefy as the 43. It measures a relatively humble 6 K.
The bridge pickup sound is what this project was really about. At first I wanted to do it like a Bronco with no neck pickup, but the extra cost for getting a neck pickup was tiny and I think it balances the design. And the both-pickups-on sound is actually very very useful. The difference in DC resistance giving no problems.
The guitar has a great and lively tone and repsonse. It's really easy and fun to play. The tone is there and the sustain is very good, but not as extreme as it can be on a good Les Paul - which suits me just fine. Overall I didn't exactly get a Gibson sound. There's obviously still too much Fender DNA in it for that (probably the bridge plays a big part), and in spite of my choice of wood and pickups it still sound somewhat Fender-ish. It's a succesful hybrid I would say.

I agree with everything already said: this guitar is flawless in every part, from concept to execution. And as stated above: if Fender made a limited-run of guitars these...
Well I would probably rob someone to get one.
Amazing!

That beautiful bound mahogany neck makes me think Gretsch... A fine looking guitar it must be said. What kind of profile does the neck have? I'd love one of those with a super slim D shape!

- It's a classic 'C' shape neck. Very much like the one on my AVRI Jaguar in shape and thickness. Kind of medium I would say. Not slim and not fat. It feels great.rexter wrote:That beautiful bound mahogany neck makes me think Gretsch... A fine looking guitar it must be said. What kind of profile does the neck have? I got USA Custom Guitar's 'C' neck on my Jazzblaster and that's thicker.
